Squealing brakes advice

I changed all my brake pads on my 08 tdv8 about 2 weeks ago , before changing they were squealing and grinding a bit , whilst changing the pads I checked all the calipers and cleaned them all up a bit also loads of copper slip on the back of the pads etc. ,now my brakes are all squealing again but only at low speed with light contact on the pedal press it harder and the noise stops , I've had a quick look and all the discs have a small lip on the inner edge of about 1mm before I get the grinder and flap disc out I just wanted to confer with the knowledge on here , is it likely this lip is the cause of my squeal or could it be something else , the pads were all mid range ones from Europarts I've used on other cars before with no problems at all , the squeak is doing my head in now so before I start any advice would be much appreciated .the pic is of one of the rear discs you can just make out the lip on the inner edge .

If it is the lip causing it I'd be tempted to grind a chamfer on the pads rather than try to clean the discs up, it could be glased discs, that rear one doesn't look too bad but are the front discs shiny??

Other causes can be worn wheel bearings or suspension bushes...

Could be the new pads as well, they all tend to work differently on different cars... Pete

If they are glazed as they are quite shiny is it worth a quick go with some emery or a flap disc ?

You can try but it's usually case hardened the surface of the disc, the only answer is machining them or new ones, machining isn't cheap anymore so new ones is usually the way to go...

If you try to grind the surface off it won't be flat and braking will cause hot spots and you'll be back to square one!!! Pete

It could easily be the rusty edge,i have put a file on these before today on front or rear drives with the wheels spinning but you will struggle with the 4x4.?you could try something like a dremmel without going crazy and a good rub with emery is ok.Make sure your pads are not too tight at the ends, its surprising how many times you have to file new ones that are too tight or have to take out the spring clips and file up behind!

OE front discs are very reasonably priced from Ducky Dan (around £60 a side) for JLR Brembo discs... Pads have come down in price too so IMHO not worth fitting anything else Thumbs Up

Had this myself after I bought an 04 TD6 the other week, it started squealing with light brake pedal pressure from the front axle, it was doing my street cred damage by announcing my departure and arrival to the street at ungodly hours. I looked at the discs and pads and thought they looked pretty good but took the plunge and ordered up new Brit part items.
As soon as I removed the Discs I realised it was probably the dust shields causing the squeal, as both sides were only retained by one bolt and not the 3 as per the standard due to rust through of material, some anti corrosion spray and large penny washers fixed that issue and on went the new discs and pads, yes the brakes are slightly better but I will retain old discs and pads as they appear serviceable. squeal has gone and think it was down to the just hanging on dust shields.

Paul Journey started in a LR2B at 16 and has incl. just about every Land Rover, Disco, RRS and Range Rover Vehicle owned or driven, I even worked for the company when it was owned by BAe - It must be a madness!!! because to add to my 4.4 TDV8 Westminister In Baltic Blue I bought a second L322 as a commuter bus, TD6 2004 Vogue in Oslo Blue with cream leather now both gone replaced with what could turn out to be my biggest mistake. Finally sorted this. Passenger side front was not working properly one of the Pistons was sticking , got an overhaul kit for £16 stripped the caliper changed the seals and cleaned the Pistons , also on the rear calipers the lower guide pins were sticking so removed them cleaned and regreased them , as well removed the discs and removed all the rusty bits etc from them , so after all that no more squealing .

My front discs had a bit of a lip on my 09MY and I thought the stopping could be better. They were also making 'graunching' noises.

Had my usually reliable local garage replace discs and pads and it stops better, but at low speeds, especially in traffic crawls it still makes the same sort of noise. Before I take it back, what could be causing the noise? 17 MY Corris Grey 4.4 VAB

If it's had discs and pads done by a garage just take it back before you mess with it.
