What can be done to stop top tailgate corroding?

As in the title, what can we do as a preventive measure? I've looked at mine & on close inspection I'm sure I can see it & im thinking I want to do something now to stop it. 2004 RR 4.4 V8 Autobiography

Fill the bottom with something like this

I find it better than waxoil as it's very thin and gets everywhere....

You can buy it in an aerosol...

To be fair Waxoyl is cheap and works ok.

But i've switched to dinitrol as my preferred product, as it's a proper 'system', and much easier to work with, especially in the cold!

Does it set like waxoyl? Craig you say not to do it with tailgate open then close, are you saying leave it open till it sets? 2004 RR 4.4 V8 Autobiography

Sort of, it skins over, which means its more resilient. Waxoyl eventually dries out and needs re-treatment after a few years.

They do a complete system though. ML if i remember correctly is the really runny one. Then 3125 is the slightly less runny one. They go right up to quite thick stuff that you can spray in wheel arches and it doesn't wash off.

Dinitrol is what most of the car manufacturers use.

Don't get me wrong waxoyl does the job and it's cheap. But it's very much an amateur use product. I used to swear by the stuff, but once i tried Dinitrol i've never looked back. No standing the can in a bucket of hot water on a cold day because it's gone too thick, no adding white spirit because it's been in the garage a while and it's gone pretty much solid in the can. And you don't have the stuff dripping out of the doors on the first hot day of the year.

I did this, my thinking was you want it to set in the bottom and the drain holes to be clear. So I sprayed liberally whilst open (you can't really do anything else) and closed after having taped paper (I used old wallpaper) over the lower tailgate and bumper (under where it would drain out) and then parked in the street so the Dinitrol didn't drip on my drive.

I know thats selfish and thoughtless but hey ho Very Happy Geoff
