Shutting down at low revs with 473 & 483 FAULTS + IID TO

Hi Gang,

Couple of problems today, so looking for tips please (2002 4.4L petrol V8 ) : 2 Faults detailed below, but it seems odd to show up all of a sudden together.

Note 1: The Rangie got fully serviced 2000 miles ago with new genuine filters and fluids.
Note 2: Rangie has not got its pollen filter tray and engine bay-wide trim holding it, has I needed to access the back of the engine for something else. No engine cover either.
Note 3: I have an IID TOOL I used to check faults = It may be helpful to check the mass airflow fault? if someone has the right standard values to compare(?)

Here is how it all happend:

Drove 20 miles, parked for 1 hour, when I restarted it, it did start for 2/3 sec and just stopped.

It took 3 tried to start and drive back the 20 miles.

Once home I tried it and it started fine. check fault : NO ENGINE FAULT!

2 hours later, we went for an egg hunt and the car just stopped running after 3 miles (i.e. : no assited steering and not power...)

It restarted right away.

It seems it just lacks fuel really : as if I hold on the pedal everyting is fine, but when it happend again, we were in a roundabout at very low revs again.

Anyone ever seen this?

FIRST ENGINE FAULT : 473-AIR MASS SENSOR FAULT

SECOND FAULT : 483-ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MONITORING/SELF-TEST

Can't remember if it was the exact same faults but I had two that were similar and it kept cutting out when near tickover, turned out to be the plug on the throttle body, it's right at the top front of the engine just under the cover you have off at the moment, pulled it out (has a detent to push in top and bottom) and gave it and the socket a good clean with some electrical cleaner and everything was OK again...

Worth a try...... Pete

Cleaned everything : body throttle plus, airflow meter, check air filter and its housing, etc.

I will drive it more tomorrow.

Anyone else ever experienced this then? l=Oo\________/oO=l l:OolΞΞΞΞΞΞΞloO:l

Yes I had low idling and stalling after changing my torque converter.
I had knocked the plug in the throttle body while climbing over the engine reconnecting the electrics at the back. IID reported a throttle issue. A quick wiggle of the throttle body plug proved it was the plug loose as the revs instantly picked up. It doesn't take much movement for it to disconnect and can be knocked loose when working on top of the engine. I just disconnected the plug fully, checked it was OK and made sure it was fully home on reconnection, ran fine after that.

Thanks, hopefully it is just this! Thumbs Up

I have been, literally, climbing in the engine bay quite a few times recently... l=Oo\________/oO=l l:OolΞΞΞΞΞΞΞloO:l

Glad that sorted it, I've had to do it twice in the last year, once when I think it got knocked and as Weejock says the pins are ridiculously small and only has to move mm's to cause problems, other time was when it got a bit wet... the moisture just stays in the plug....

When it got wet it didn't show any faults but the engine just ticked over no matter how much you pushed the accelerator.... then the symptoms you described when it had moved a bit...

If it turns out to be an ongoing problem I'm going to get another throttle body and hard wire it in.... Pete
