obd2

am i correct in assuming that a basic obd2 interface cable connected to my laptop will only read and clear engine faults and light failure faults and if i wanted to clear an airbag fault or activate 'nav on the go' then i would have to pay the bloke in cyprus loads of money for a faultmate.. ... - .- -.

Correct.

USB OBDC Scanner for Engine Faults
iBus Interface for Nav/LCM mods

Rovacom/Faultmate/T4 for everything else.

Personally the idea of spanking hundreds of $$ on something that is locked onto one VIN number does not appeal to me in any way shape or form!

That would come under LCM (light control module) mods

I turned off the bulb check for the side lights as I put LED's in there.

scarey, there is a cheaper version of the unit you want, it will read and clear loads of stuff, from engine to air bags
https://blackbox-solutions.com/shop/ faltmat fcr 11
this is the same as its big brother but is big brother can write to the modules. as you know colin is the man to speak to, ohh the cheaper one can only be used on one car.
have a read up it is a very good unit for the price, nothing comes close
The Faultmate FCR is designed and manufactured specifically for Reading and Clearing all possible Fault Codes on every system with built-in self diagnostic capability on board each Land Rover model it covers.

Provided and priced as a personal use item for individual vehicle owners, the Faultmate FCR will lock itself to the VIN of the first vehicle it is used on, however, this feature also acts as a theft deterrent, because there is little point anyone stealing the unit, as once used on a vehicle, as it will not work with any other vehicle.

Each Kit comes complete with a FCR Unit, an OBD/Interface Lead, a USB Cable and User Guide - everything you need to start Reading and Clearing your Fault Codes. V8 facelift Range Rover Autobiography 22" wheels.

Compared to the cost of dealer diagnosis on faults and also the cost of adding options to the car, some of which even the dealers can't do, (D3 cruise control for example) I don't think it's unreasonable. A fair chunk of money maybe but even at about £1k, if it saves you £2k over the years then it was a good investment, yes?

Then consider the value of having it in the glovebox to clear the odd fault, not that Land Rovers of any sort ever have those Whistle

And the bit about it being tied to one VIN is not strictly true. This can be changed for an upgrade fee or an open license can be purchased which is obviously a much larger chunk of cash.

Yep, the MSV2 Nano was one of the first tools I bought for my current car and replaced the unit I had for my old P38. Sure it's an expensive initial outlay, but it means I can tackle any job on the car without issue.
It's more than paid for itself by negating the need to visit the main dealer on three separate occasions - all of which were simple sensor failures (maf, lambda and abs sensor) but would have meant three lots of diaganosis and three lots of spannering all at main dealer prices.
(Edit to add: I also recently discovered a fault with the leccy part of the thermostat which didn't pop any lights up on the dashboard and as winter is approaching it's nice to have that working correctly)

If you decide not to replace your current RR with another, there's always a strong secondhand market for the units and you'll get a significant chunk of money back on your outlay. Not sure you should be reading this bit.
