Rear door/fuel filler trap unlocking, gremlins & BCU

My Nov 2004 (2005 model with Touch-screen) Td6 is suffering from some sort of electrical gremlin which does not seem to have been talked about on this forum. The problem is intermittent: sometimes when I go to unlock the doors, the rear doors do not unlock (nor, I have subsequently, discovered, does the fuel filler trap, which is connected to the same BCU terminal, I believe). It takes several lock/unlock sequences either using the remote or the central unlock button inside the car for the rear doors to unlock. Other times there is no problem whatsoever!

I read on another site – RangeRovers.net (am I allowed to say that, or is it a dirty word???) – that I was not alone with this problem. On that site, others talked of the problem also being associated with stiff steering (I sometimes have that too, but hadn’t connected the two problems …) and/or the upper tailgate not unlocking (also happens to me sometimes).
The consensus seemed to be that this was a Body Control Unitproblem, and that replacing it would cure all ills. Another suggestion was that it could be the close proximity of some of the BCU pins/wiring and/or bare wires or kinks in the plug harness. One person even suggested spraying WD-40 onto the connectors would fix the problem for some period of time!

I understand the BCM is a pretty expensive item, but that they can be had on Ebay, for example. The problem is that I have a very low mileage on my FF and do not want to run the risks associated with putting in a BCU from a higher mileage car and having my recorded mileage upped ….

Checking the BCU fault codes today, I found:
- 0X5 BCU unlock relay short to ground
- 0X81 Servo valve or connections short-circuited.
I’ve cleared them and wait to see if they re-appear. In the meantime, however, can any of you learned people out there throw any light on the problem and suggest a remedy? Bow down Bow down

you should first check out the condition of the battery...make sure it holds its volts under a drop test..
low battery voltage will cause many problems on the FF ,especially on the td6.. ... - .- -.

Thanks, Stan.
Whilst I accept a duff battery can cause all sorts of problems, I am not sure it’s the cause of this particular gremlin - though I’m not dismissing the idea either.
The battery was showing a healthy 12.6V when I went to unlock the car just now. But the rear doors and fuel filler trap did not unlock. I pressed lock & unlock several times, both using the remote and the button inside the car, and with the ignition on and off. It took about 8 attempts before suddenly the back door unlocking sprang into life! Shocked
(When this happens, the rear doors won’t open from the inside, with the handle, either.)
It’s difficult to be certain as it’s sunny and warm here most of the time, but it does seem that the problem occurs when the car’s been left locked in the sun. I can’t recall ever having had this problem when it’s been dull, cold or raining!
Any other thoughts anyone? It's "bébéchoon", ackcherly, with accents. 'Steve' to my chums.
