TD6 '02 Gearbox Fluid Change Experience | |
Last time I changed the gbox oil, I did just that, but this time decided to replace the filter as well.
Draining down went well, @ 4.5 litres out (a bit more than last time, along with the 200ml I spilt on the ground!).
Undid all the sump bolts, sump stayed up so, moving to the side a bit I gave it a tug. Down it came, showered with fluid I was , but managed to retain most of it in the sump. Where did all this come from if I had drained it?
This produced another litre from the sump, plus the shower of @ 200ml.
All in all getting on for @ 6 litres out.
The orange rubber seals on the gasket stayed behind in the gbox, these needed to be hooked out with a small allen key held in some molegrips.
Cleaned up the sump (some black greasy stuff in the bottom) refitted with new filter, gasket and bolts supplied as kit from Dan at Duckworths. Eventually I put gentle tightening on these bolts three times (still not received a torque wrnech for Christmas or Birthday), they weren't that tight when taking off, guess need to take care not to strip in the soft metal of the gbox?
Having had a messy time with a cheapo syphon pump last time, I use some regular hosepipe with a smaller bit of pipe at one end (to fit into the filler hole), and a funnel at the other poking up in the engine bay. Used a measuring jug and managed to get just under 4 litres in when it started to dribble out of the hole. I still had another 2 litres to get in!
Filler plug back in. Started engine, inserted IIDTool, Live Values, Transmission, Gearbox Temperature: 20 degrees (I had brought the new fluid into the house overnight to warm it up a bit)
Took about fifteen minutes for temperature to rise to 43 degrees, then jumped in the car and did the PRNDNRP shuffle with five second intervals.
Filler plug out, pipe back in, poured in another 1/2 litre, dribbles from filler hole
PRNDNRP shuffle
Got another litre in, dribble from filler hole
PRNDNRP shuffle
final half litre - ish (just under), dribbles from filler hole
Refitted filler plug and tightened up
Cleaned up, reset the gearbox (Acc pedal down, Ignition to 2, hold pedal down for 60 secs, Ignition off, release acc pedal)
Test drive (nice) and check for leaks (none)
Will check levels again in @ a week and for leaks. .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember
