dreadded tailgate tin worm

So I decided to pop in to our local body shop to see if they could re-spray the tailgate today.
Yes, he says BUT I'll need to cut this bit out, take 2 days and 400 quid.....cant guaranty the rust wont come back in a month or 12 months time ! ( I knew this before going as been a land rover owner for 20 years), but ouch at the cost!

Why or why has LR never sorted the tin worm on the tailgates of RR's, my D1 is in a bad state ( shes 17 years old though) but don't want the RR going that way so nippin it in the bud soon is the only way.

Seen a few on the bay of e, even one that's the same colour too!!....but at what risk/time to change again in the future...

So is it better to go late <6> and do the same but wax oil all seems ......what did LR do to make the later ones,. worse for catching the tin worm.

LR should of galv the rear tail gates from late classics, I guess the 405 will be the same in 10 years time. If it dont work.......burn it!

If the IId tool cant fix it.......burn the FF.

If the FF cant be fixed......buy a Land Cruiser!

If the LC cant be fixed..............................................BUY a horse !!

Personally I would go with a new panel and make sure it's properly sealed up for longevity. I had mine done under warranty and even though LR were paying I thought it was a reasonable cost.

The panel isn't too bad price wise and if you were to buy one you could then spray cold galv into the rust prone lower seam area, get it painted, waxoyl the inside and fit yourself. You would need to find a friendly window fitter who could remove and refit the glass though.

Buying a secondhand one is OK as long as you can inspect it first. If there's any sign of rust in there then leave it well alone. Trying to stop rust once it's started is a futile exercise, it must be prevented in the first place. At least with a new panel you have a known good starting point.

Mine is in the bodyshop at the moment having the front end replaced after a Citroen took ballet lessons on the M4 and took me out, but asked them to quote to do the rear tailgate as I have rust on the seam - they quoted £250 to sand blast the whole thing and respray and waxy. They can't guarantee it won't come back, but did say it shouldn't come back for at least a couple of years. That included new badges on the rear door too.
