Update: Got up this morning with new resolve to get the Bosch S5 to fit. Took it out and started again. Finally got it to fit after moving the negative side of the battery slightly forward. Now the positive terminal clamp fits on properly although extremely tightly jammed in on the side. The left hand side battery hold down clamp fits perfectly now but since the right hand side is slightly forward there is no room for the clamp.

I've done enough now and I'm stopping there. Not perfect but good enough.  2012 5.0L S/C

Just ordered a Varta Silver Dynamic 020 Battery (I1) as a replacement - are there any issues with the pyrotechnic charge? The handbook is full of all sorts of worrying warnings about risk of death etc. etc. when playing around with this.....

Bought the Varta Silver Dynamic 020 Battery (I1) after doing my homework here on the threads. As I was taking my 57 Plate TDV8 VSE into JD Automotive in Northwich for an Inspection 2 service (which ain't cheap!) I asked them to swap over the battery for me at the same time. (I'm waiting for back surgery, so was keen to avoid wrestling with the weight of this thing by doing it myself...).

Cheshire's leading Land Rover Specialist (their words...) couldn't make the change. Apparently the Varta is 4cms too long. And yet plenty of other people have made it fit....

JD Automotive wanted to sell me the Oldham 020A Battery, wich is their recommended 110Ah Battery. The dimensions of the Oldham battery are 393x175x190. The dimensions of the Varta battery I took along are 393x175x190. EXACTLY the same size. Strange how the battery they wanted to sell me would have fitted but the one I provided was too big.

Can anyone suggest where I could possibly go in the North West to get somebody to do this swap for me? I live in the South Cheshire area (near Nantwich) but would be prepared to travel within a reasonable distance to get this done.

(Failing that - anybody want to buy an unused Varta battery.......??)

Pretty much any mechanic worth his salt should be able to do it - doesn't need to be a LR specialist.

I'm only semi competent and mine took me all of 15 mins.

There are 2 things that you need to do - as mentioned earlier in this thread -

1) undo the gas struts - lever of the little clips with a screwdriver and they just pull off - be careful with the clips as they spring off

2) prop the bonnet in the near vertical position - if you look closely at the hinges gou will se a thin metal piece you can move up that will lock the bonnet open

After that it's just 2 screws out, 2 terminals off, battery out and a bit of wiggling the new battery in - I think I pulled a bit of padding off one side of the battery compartment - but it will fit.

If you lived closer I'd do it for you, it really is pretty straight forward.

I fitted my Bosch S5 the other day and removed the flanges off the sides of the battery. At first I was convinced it still wouldn't fit due to the explosive fuse on the +ve side, but a bit of fiddling got it in and both clamps are back on and screwed down tight. I also removed the earth strap to make it eaiser to locate it and refitted it once the battery was in place. It is a VERY tight fit, but definitely fits.

As well as the bonnet being in the service position as mentined previously, a foot stool, or small ladder will also make life so much easier. Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

TBH i tried and although im convinced it probably would fit, as many people also have done it, i opted for the Bosch S5 100AH version, and so far it seems to be perfectly OK. and its the same size as the original so fits first time no swearing or trimming required, 5 min job.  There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I think that because you need to removed the flanges (cut off to be more specific) from the sides of the battery, no garage will accept libility for doing this, so unless you have a "friendly" mechanic you know, going in cold and asking them to do this for you won't work. Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue
