Rusty Sills... A heads up to owners of early FFRR's

Hi

Just taken the sill covers off mine to have a look at making some rock sliders.... mine has the usual rust starting on the rear wheel arch lip but it has spread to the sill as well, picture shows where the jacking point on the rear drivers side is. You can also see some damage by some idiot in the past who missed the jacking point...

The sill covers are easy to get off, six plastic plugs underneath and then just pull it away with the doors open, it has several push fit clips, the jacking points come off by prising out the central plastic pin and pulling them off, there are also several large holes in the face of the sill with rubber bungs so should be easy to rustproof the sill from the inside with just a spray can of you favorite rust preventer.

I've repaired the damage, removed all the rust and treated mine...

Sill cover fixing

Prise out the central pin on the jacking point, I used a small screwdriver, this was the front one

Your then left with this... well hopefully yours will be better...

The sill cover is so comprehensive that there was no evidence of this with it in place, I supposed you could take out the jacking point first to see if yours is OK...

Just thought I'd share and add another job to everyone's list...!!! Pete

Gonna do mine one side at a time along with the arches. Cheers for the how to on the cover removal mate. That'll save lots of snapped bits!

Are these sill trims held on purely by the plastic clips ? No bolts to un do any where ?

Imo lot to be said for giving the sills a heavy coat of black grease before refitting the plastic sill covers and then cleaning away any excess.

I had the plastic cover sills off mine last year, painted and waxoiled.

Luckily caught before any holes appeared.

I also noticed I have rust coming through the rear wheel arch, to be expected I suppose as the car is 12 years old now.

It is a bit more tricky if you have side steps fitted Thumbs Up .

Another good reason for not having side steps.
