car tax

ok why does it cost an extra £25 to pay for only 6 months tax rather than the full years amount..its all online now so theres no way it costs that much in admin fees...

6 months = £275
12 months = £500

Probably because if you pay for only 6 months, they lose 6 months of interest in their bank account.

It's much the same way as booking a hotel weeks/months in advance, except that allows the hotel to bank it, so they get the interest on your cash and you get a cheaper room Thumbs Up Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

Can't you pay monthly these days, Stan? Would that be any better? Si. <This is my name.

Always better to pay car tax upfront if you can - By far the best VFM.

Remember if you sell your car you get only the tax refunded (pro rata) but you lose the extra admin fees. So, 6 months @ £250.00 + £12.50 admin fee or 12 months @ £500 + 25.00 admin fee. The admin fees is nonrefundable but does not apply if you pay upfront.

On a related note, if you're not planning to use the car for a month (or more) then SORN and re-taxing is now a very simple thing to do online. I always thought it was not worth the hassle but it's so easy and gives a bit of satisfaction knowing you're not paying for a vehicle that's out of use! Thumbs Up 2006 4.2 SC

I'm putting all of mine over to monthly DD when they come up as it's easy and you don't subsequently forget as you're not now staring at a Tax Disc every time you get in the car.
Also, as stated, I can use my classics by the month now.... Great idea. Regards

I've got to tax my motorhome and, from Mark's comments, I think monthly will work out well as I only need pay for the months he's in use. I was going to SORN him in November anyway for his winter rest, but paying monthly should make this even easier. Si. <This is my name.

I'd be willing to bet the government change the rules on monthly payments though in the next year to make you commit to 6 months or 12 months DD....
I wouldn't want to hazard a guess at the money involved (tens of thousands vehicles??) being taxed for one or two months rather than six???

Enough to make someone in the treasury stand up and say something Regards

I have 2 of my 3 vehicles on monthly payments now and will put the 3rd on when due. On my main 2 which are used year round no real difference except not having to apply for a refund if I sell but does avoid taxing 3 in 3 months ( none in the lower bands) so spreads the cost evenly.

On my BMW which is mainly used in the summer I could now easily SORN for a couple of months which I could do before but was always a bit too much hassle to bother to fill out the paperwork to save a couple of odd months when not used and then having to re-tax if I decided or needed to use. Really no different you have always been able to tax for 6 or 12 months then apply for a refund if sold or SORN even the next day and you still only get credit for full calendar months just easier online with no docs to send off. There is a difference between knowing your sh!t and knowing you're sh!t

Paying monthly attracts a 5% surcharge so there is no way that it could be regarded as best VFM. Without doubt, it's easy and convenient though but they know this, hence the premium!

You don't apply for a refund any more, the balance of tax is automatically sent to you by DVLA when they do the V5 change of keeper details. Thumbs Up 2006 4.2 SC
