Key Programming

Has anyone programmed a spare key using the method described below?
The reason I ask is I am collecting a new key tomorrow from LR and it will require £60 of my hard earned groats for them to programme the key to my vehicle. Being that I am from north of Hadrians Wall I would rather the £60 stayed in my pocket.

Programming a new Key

Replacing a missing master key is quite expensive from Land Rover, try not to get sucked into the extra cost of "Dealer coding" You can do this yourself in 2 minutes by following the simple process below.

1) Get in and close all doors. Turn ignition on and off quickly and remove the key (all within about 5 seconds).

2) Within 30 seconds of turning the ignition off, while holding down the "unlock" button, press the "lock" button three times. Release the "unlock" button. (You may or may not get the confirmation from the door locks.) Holding the key at your head level provides best results as the key sensor is in the side window pillar.

3) Repeat for each key you want to initialize within 30 seconds after the last one you initialized (if you have more).

4) Right after doing the last key, quickly put the key back in the ignition and turn it on/off again to finalize.

United Kingdom 2004 Range Rover Vogue Td6 Java Black

I have read that it works but not tried it yet, i need a new key so i will watch this post with interest. At the very least try it in the car park before getting them to do it.

I lost my key on a stag do about a month ago, my missis was so pleased when i rang in the morning to explain she needed to drive 150 miles to drop the spare off.... Rolling with laughter

Can you tell me more please, how much did landrover charge for just the key and can i buy a new over the phone with my vin number or you got to take the log book, id in etc.

Thanks 2004 black Vogue TD6

You need to go into the dealership with your V5 and a driving licence or passport as proof to order a key. The cost is £168.50 + VAT, although I never paid for mine, the person who sold me the vehicle has paid for it.

What I am unsure of is do I need to re-programme my old key at the same time as the new one, or just the new key?

Did you only programme the new key or all keys?

Which key did you use for:

I have the key that I received with the FFRR which I am using to start/drive the vehicle and I have ordered a spare key which I will collect tomorrow.

When I programme in my new key will I have to reprogramme the old key?

hi this is how it works as i have done it.. you can reprogram the blip and it will open the doors and lock the doors but will not start the car. as said in post before you can NOT reprograme a used transponda chip, not your self or at a dealer, it will be a new reprogamed one and will have to come from the dealer. they have you buy the balls.and best of all you have to pay up front for te key... V8 facelift Range Rover Autobiography 22" wheels.

When a new key is ordered from LR it comes ready to start the vehicle, the transponder is already paired to the anti-theft system of the vehicle and the new key will start the engine. (this was what I suspected).

The new key however will not unlock or lock the doors, this has to be done with the method shown in my earlier post. Both keys have to be done at the same time as per my earlier post as only doing one knocks the other out of sync.

The only thing I can add is to ensure that you only put the ignition to position 1 when you are going through the procedure. If you put the ignition to position 2 the procedure will not work.

This is for 2002-2006 vehicles, newer vehicles have to be plugged into the computer

Hope this helps

Remember the key to position 1 only or it won't work

Christ thats a bargain.
I was quoted NZ$1100 for key 3 weeks ex UK. I will leave the conversion rate to you guys. What Censored me off is I have a nice new housing, I have a good working mechanical key, I have a good working transponder what I do not have is a good working circuit board.
I have tried synching this key as it was the original working key when I bought the car, the spare had a flat battery. Now it occasionally works while the spare goes great guns.
Is it possible to just change the electronic bits without going through all the hassle of a key and transponder?

Adrian
