2003 Range Rover HSE Td6 Epsom Green
Rattle from rear axle

Driving home this morning and the pig sounded terrible, a rattling noise coming from the rear end.

At first I thought it was the brake back plates as it sounded similar to when the front ones rusted loose. But no they seem tight.

Checked all other heat shields in case one had become loose and was dragging on the propshaft, looked Ok.

My Indy is off sick at the mo. so taken to another garage, who think that it sounds like either the pads or handbrake shoes have broken up.

Is this normal ???

or any other suggestions please Three things in a blokes life his dog,his car and a Cornish pasty, nothing else matters.

If they are the original handbrake shoes then yes it's possible that maybe a spring has broken or similar..... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Possible that the shoe holding pins have "pulled" through their holes in the back plate and these are rattling around?

If dismantling try to release the pins from the outside, otherwise they are likely to pull though the back plate when you jemmy the brake drum off! .

Got her back and as you all correct diagnosed it was the hand brake shoes that had disintegrated and the pins dropping out.

She's back all quiet.
