2004 Brake Shield Fixable?

Hi all,

My drivers side brake mud shield is now lose and wobbling around and causing pedestrians to wonder what the hell has just driven past. The mechanics have told me that to replace it is a major job (£300 inc labour) as the hub and bearing needs to be removed. They advised I could just cut it off from behind and not replace it. On the newer L322s the shield is a different design allowing easier removal without touching the hub.

I have read that some on here are using washers to help secure it again around the worn bolt hole but before I get the wheel off is this an easy fix for the early L322s. Would I need to remove the callipers etc to get to the securing bolts?

Any help greatly appreciated. Tom

Very simple if I remember , look round the back of the shield and see the bolts just remove the bolt and put a big penny washer on it and re-fasten . 2008 MY Supercharged

Even easier, rip the rest of it off and throw it in the bin..... first thing I do to all my off roaders, makes no difference to the braking ability and to me is nothing but a win win situation..

You don't get stones stuck in it and you don't get a build up of mud (if you off road it) or silt (if you don't) which always rot the back of the disc out first...

Every car I've had has rotted the back of the disc out first, and I'm convinced it's because it doesn't get cleaned by spray etc like the other side of the disc does.... Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Pete

Interesting point and something I will do if I cannot secure it easily with a washer, a lot of people on various forums say the shields don't really do much (many cars don't have them from factory) and surely if the disc is better protected with it then it should have a shield on both sides! Tom

A well timed post. I have had problems with mine and after reading above (and a quick google) it seems they are really surplus to requirements so I will simply not replace them when I put the new disks and pads on. Also, therefore saving myself quite a bit as they are not cheap!

Not only are they not cheap but they're a pain in the ass to replace as the entire hub has to be stripped off to change them

All bolt fixing areas were totally shot and it looked like a complete pain even to add washers so I just tin snipped it off and now there is no rattle. Will do the other wheels as and when they need it. Tom

You can't remove the rears on an FF, the shield is the backing for the handbrake shoes, they rust out to and are NOT a DIY job to change, you need the driveshafts out and the hub apart, chances are it will destroy the bearing and you need a special tool to get the drivshaft back in...
