.....how many litres of AFC is lost before this message appears on the dash. I had the message tonight and the expansion tank is bone dry......so just wondering on how much AFC to mix up before topping up.

(have noticed a very slight drip bouncing off the large thick tubular beam from underneath the car - not sure of its name but this tube like beam is placed kinda directly under the bulk head - between the engine and gearbox)

It'll be around a liter....

That drip is probably condensation from the aircon, mop some up with a tissue and see what colour it is... Pete

i did - it was colourless and no smell to it...........is that ac condensate?

(a bit of background......recently had my whole cooling system, pcv system, blower resistor changed. Previously i had a massive rad leak and no HVAC as blower resistor was dead. Now everything works .....except the new coolant leak............also been having a very very slight whiff of what i can only describe as hot coolant in the cabin when the heaters have been on. Is this related to the coolant loss?)

The drip as Haylands said is just water condensation from the A/C, nothing to worry about (usually leaves a nice pool under the car in the summer!)

Possible you do have a leak somewhere? When was the last time you checked the coolant (i.e. how long did it take to drop)

I have an invisible/unfindable leak that gets through @ 1/2 litre every 1000 miles, but never smell anything... .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember

exactly 240 miles since i picked it up from the mechanic after all the above mentioned work was done. Just filled up the bone dry expansion tank......2litres exactly. Cant see no other puddles except the clear condensate.

Just keep an eye on it, they are very difficult to bleed properly and it could be air that was trapped in the system...

Joe, mine has one of them as well only it takes about 2,500miles to use 1/2 ltr.... weird.... Pete

The expansion tanks very often get pin holes in them usually along the seam that only open up at pressure leading to a steady but mysterious coolant loss . Also make sure you have the correct mixture , too much water and the SG will be wrong and throw a message I believe . 2008 MY Supercharged

Cheers for the idea, but the early ones don't have that feature, mine was full of neat water when I got it and no warning was showing, cleaned my expansion bottle and it has no stains so don't think it's that... Pete

I had a similar problem a few weeks ago - had to top up the coolant level twice within a few days of each other.

Before I had time to investigate the issue more thoroughly, the car stopped dead. The problem was that I had lost all coolant due to a split lower hose (goes from front of engine to rear of engine, but not visible due to tray under engine). My garage renewed this and the top hose and everything was fine, apart from my wallet which was £500 lighter (this included a £100 recovery fee, as I had let my RAC cover lapse!!).
