United Kingdom 2012 Range Rover Autobiography TDV8 Santorini Black
Informed opinions sought on possible purchase.

This is a 2011 (61) 5.0 sc AB with under 41,000 miles and is up for £37,000. The dealer reckons 4/5 days for valet and prep - no doubt the latter will include a repair to the rear nearside wheel arch!

I haven't been able to view it yet so haven't checked the vehicle over but….

Can I please invite the learned forum members for their views on this vehicle based on the scant information available? Many thanks in advance.

If I were to ask "difficult" questions such as when the gearbox fluid was changed, when were the pads/discs last changed and other such items, should the dealer be able to find the answers?

I only ask because coming from MB who have electronic service record and work schedules, I don't know what system LR use.

EDIT: I wonder what kind of response I'll get when I unfurl my overalls and ask to look underneath Twisted Evil

Due diligence:

http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic32439.html?highlight=history

You should very much ask awkward questions.

If the car was serviced at a dealership within that group network, then they should easily be able to confirm all and any work undertaken on such a new car. If the work was done within another main dealer network, you would need to approach the other network service dept and your starting point would be the name and phone number on the service book stamp for contact details.

Warranty work that has been completed should be retrievable by means of furnishing an LR Parts Dept the chassis number. For example, site sponsor Duckworth LR who are always helpful.

I've previously asked RR main dealers to put the car up on the ramps in their workshop to see the underside of the car and they've obliged.

You should have quite a lot of 'consumer rights' protection if buying an A.U RR with a 2 year warranty anyway.

Thumbs Up

LR also have an Electronic service schedule, and should be able to look up when all routine servicing was done, also all warranty work too, along with the time triggered items such as diff oils and brake fluid.

Im not too sure if they log things like brake pads and discs, but at that milage I would not expect the gearbox oil to have been changed as a mater of course, or the diff and transfer box oils as they are not specified for change until higher milage and age. You should be able to have a good look at the discs, IIRC that they would be close to needing changing by 40k so may well have been done as part of the PDI. if they havent then it would be a point to be made in the negotiations that the front discs and pads are all done. Thumbs Up

I would almost certainly get on my back underneath, as you should be able to look and see if it has been dragged round a few fields, they shouldn't object.

Do your reading before you go and have a look, mostly for the normal stuff, rust etc, but its a nice colour, Ivory is good with green and I really like the wheels, however from that pic you can't tell much more than that, you need to get up close and see it in the metal. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Just watched the see it now video. He didn't open the tailgate and show you the boot.

Aside to the rear near side bodywork damage: query front/ tyre tread although very difficult other than to speculate from the footage and they should be of a min tread depth under the A.U scheme; the front passenger seat edge looks - IMO - a puckered mess as seen from the front and rear video camera angles (not seen that before and the driver's seat edge might be the same too although he didn't show you footage from the passenger side).

It's a nice looking car and the miles are low although the driver's seat looks quite heavily used for such low mileage?

As he says, the car hasn't been cleaned and prepared yet.

Regardless of any corporate speech offered about the approved used pre sales inspection, worth reading up on what that inspection comprises and making sure it's all done as it should be.

Also check for:

Corrosion all around the rear wheel arch undersides/ remove the wheel arch rubbers to check; and

Carefully check the tailgate edges for corrosion/ bubbling paintwork; and

Be aware of noisy tappets/ Technical Bulletins LTB00482v3 - 5.0L Supercharger Noise &
LTB00474 - 5.0L AJ133 Primary Chain System Engine Noise
http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic21010....sy+tappets

As nmj says, would be very surprised if gearbox oil, diff oils or transfer case fluid have been changed at that age and mileage; and if you've got a set of overalls and are prepared to crawl under the car before buying anyway, you'll doubtless be more than capable of changing diff and transfer case fluids yourself, you'll know it's been done correctly and all for less than £100 for the correct oils/ fluids Thumbs Up

Just watched that too, personally would want to see the car as is before they polish it to death......

that way you should be better able to tell how well it has been cared for, the nearside damage doesn't look severe, and probably recent, but the whole rear quarter will need painting and for a good job personally would want that blended forwards so the panel doesn't stick out!

I agree with Ryan above, the seats do look quite shiny, probably just need a good clean to restore them but would want to see them close up as they can wear badly on the outer edge!

with a full valet it should be a nice looking car though, its a good colour combo, but it needs going round with the proverbial fine toothed comb, if you like the look of it get over there and take a check list with you, Ryan did a great buyers guide in the Wiki, which should give you a few points to look at Thumbs Up There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

The "puckering" on the passenger seat side looks to have been caused by the arm rest being up more than down IMO.

its been on both of mine, doesn't seem to go even if you leave the armrests down. Couldn't figure it out myself what was causing it until Richtdv8 pointed out it was the arms. Thumbs Up There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

All very useful information chaps; thank you.

The dealer has offered to take a refundable £1000 deposit to hold the car and I shall make a decision on that sooner rather than later…this is only one of three s322 /c ABs available currently on the LR website with other two being a considerable distance away.

Out of preference I would have preferred a younger car but I guess it will always be a gamble; wait for the perfect combo that might never come or grasp a good compromise when it appears.

There is a lot to be said to buying anything locally (I always do if at all possible) but in this case, the dealership is Guy Salmon. As I am mid way between GS @ Maidstone and Lookers of Chelmsford so would look to try and keep the car in the GS network whilst in warranty.

Just a thought- could you apply some steam? I think that's what the upholsterers do.
