Anyway...with the freezing morning, I find the doors sticks to the car like glue, what do you guys do to prevent it from sticking?

if i know that there is going to be a cold snap overnight , to prevent the door from sticking before i lock it up for the night i just run a dry microfibre cloth around the door seal and around the internal frame of the door.

mostly the cause of this is just condensation really , or if its really bad a leaking door seal .... ====================================

you can also wipe the seals with a cloth that has something like WD40 or maybe even Vaseline jelly as it also helps the water proofing and keeps the rubber supple. Discovery 4 HSE

Food grade silicone lubricant is a good "winterisation" trick to do at the start of winter. It stops the stickiness, but also doesn't poison you if you get it on your (or your kids) hands. Also washes out if you get it on your clothes (and doesn't stink!). -

I'd clean the seals down thoroughly first with solvent based spray or vinegar/acetic acid, let them dry then apply grease.


If you're feeling rich you can use Klüber BARRIERTA L 55 series grease. You smear it on then wipe off and it'll condition the seals and stop them sticking. It's about £80 a kilo if I remember rightly, but will last you a lifetime (the cheaper stuff above is probably a much better compromise and much easier to get hold of)

WD-40 also works well, but I find the smell hangs around for ages and it transfers onto clothes too easily.

In the Aircraft industries where planes go to like minus 50 Deg C and temperatures can vary 70 Deg C within an hour only Silicon compound is used for "winterisation" in various form depending on surface and size.
Silicon spray on a can, liquid or in tubes (tooth paste or cream like). Nothing else is approved by the Civil Aviation Authorities.

I suggest to clean the seals as described above and then apply a thin layer of silicon and wipe excessive off. also squirt a few drops of silicon oil into your door locks just in case of a dead battery. this way you are secured entrance into your own car whatever the temperature.

I used to live in Denmark where wet windy weather and substantial temperature drops in the night is the worst combination for freezing the doors to the frame, and with one good lubrication before the winter cures all problems.

I have seen this image and others. They are fantastic. I beleive they were taken from one of the Lakes in Switzerland but cant remember which one.
