Crash barrier testing...

If you've ever looked at the innocuous metal barriers that line foreign embassies and military installations, and wondered just how effective they'd be against a rogue vehicle, then wonder no more.

Researchers at the Texas based A&M Transportation Institute have released a new video showing just what happens when you ram one of the barriers with a huge lorry at 50mph.

Measuring 24-foot wide, and buried 18 inches deep in the ground, the barriers prove more than effective at stopping the runaway lorry, completely destroying the cab – spelling curtains for anyone inside.

Unbelievably, the lorry was also fitted out with a simulated explosive device, to realistically replicate what would happen if a government building was attacked by a ram-raiding suicide bomber. The barrier managed to stop the lorry and dissipate the force of the impact enough to avoid detonation.

"The goal of the test was to prevent the bed of the truck going 50 mph from passing one meter past the barrier," an A&M spokesman said, reports the Daily Mail.

"The bed is where a bomb might be, and that's what the barrier is meant to keep out."

The driver's ability to survive the impact was not considered a primary concern, the researchers revealed.
