Bugatti Insurance Claim

Read then watch Shocked

A man who deliberately crashed a £603,580 Bugatti Veyron into a lake in a failed attempt at insurance fraud faces a 20-year jail sentence.

39-year-old car dealer Andy Lee House came off the road and drove the Veyron – then the world's fastest production car – straight into La Marque Lagoon, near Galveston, Texas, causing extensive damage to the vehicle.

House, who originally claimed he had crashed after swerving to avoid a pelican, had bought the car using a $1million loan, and immediately insured it for $2.2million on a collector's policy.

Unfortunately for him, his crash was filmed by a car enthusiast who was passing the Veyron on a parallel carriageway and was recording the hypercar.

Naturally, footage of such a rare and expensive vehicle crashing in such a spectacular manner soon went viral around the internet, which proved a problem for House, as it invalidated his pelican story.

The footage also shows the driver of the car making no attempt to brake as the car careers into the lake.

Analysis of the car revealed that House – who is a vehicle expert – left the engine running for over ten minutes while the car was submerged, causing catastrophic damage as it flooded with salt water.

After initially starting counter-litigation against the insurance company for withholding payment for the damaged vehicle, House has since admitted deliberately destroying the car, and pleaded guilty to wire mail fraud, the Lufkin Daily News reports.

A sentencing date has yet to be set, though House faces a maximum term of 20 years in prison.

How on earth could an engine run for 10 minutes while being submerged?

Hang on. There's a second bit...

Thanks, Bellini.

To answer your question, no idea but two guesses:

1 The engine hadn't sucked in any water, so he left it running until it did.
2 If they managed to rip off the sump, he could have been lubricating the engine with salt water until it was truly nackered.
