I opted for the Halfords Breaker Bar as I'd seen a previous post of yours where you reported buying a similar one and seemed quite pleased with the purchase.

When the time came to loosen the lower, M12 size, nut on the passenger side drop link, I also found an Ace in my existing tool pack in the form of a cracking (pun intended!) tool as an alternative to a socket or spanner to fit the nut?.. the wheel brace from within the tool kit that came with my Mercedes Sprinter Bottle Jack! A perfect fit over the nut and after an hour of leaving that nut soaking up some penetrating fluid and followed by a good dose of 'Plus Gas', this wheel brace responded well to my full body weight pulling the lower passenger side nut which loosened very quickly and without need for heat or any cutting tools.

And as many have said, I replaced both front drop links without removing the wheels and with the car locked in off road height.

** Any idea why only the top mount of both front drop links has a washer on the 'blind side' of the nut and not on the bottom one? **

Propane blow torch won't produce enough heat to remove stubborn seized nuts or bolts, you need a Mapp Gas blow torch

I'll take your word on that 47P2 but the nut certainly appeared easier to hacksaw after a few minutes of having my wee blow torch breathing fire on it!

Having test drove the car briefly after replacing the driver's side drop link yesterday, I instantly felt it had solved the knocking noise and so I then replaced passenger side drop link last night to even things up.

Having this morning driven - as normal - all the normal lower speed routes which was when I used to hear the knocking noises, it is obvious that the knocking noise has gone and in fact the car does feel more composed in that it seems to wallow, sway, roll (however you want to describe it) less.

Well done. I hate using heat on metal if it can be avoided since you don't know if the material was heat treated and by adding heat to it (and letting it cool quickly) it screws up the material properties (for example making it brittle, a common problem when you cool steel too quickly).

So using mechanical tools, like hacksaws and nut splitters would be my first venture into destructive deconstruction efforts before going for the final final very last resort and that is heat. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

Well whether you're both being seious or flippant to my daft question

I fitted a washer to the bottom part of my new drop links!

Just wanted to say that a set of impact sockets (6 slided) are a big help in situations like this, and while I realise that the horse has slung its hook, they might be a consideration before the next job. Also a drill can come in handy, you can drill some holes in the side of the nut, and bash the stuffing out of it with a cold chisel and a knock-o-meter. By drilling the holes before you bash, you remove a lot of the nut and it gives up a lot easier  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

No, being totally serious, it has one, hardened steel washer behind the top fitting, on the "wrong" side, and nothing on the bottom.... but who knows why?? Pete
