Was told today by my RAC European cover that they are awaiting diagnostic report from dealership in Chur, Switzerland. Wouldn't mind if it was very high mileage but she's only done 78000 miles. Still not going to let it spoil family holiday...............too much! Sad

Nice place Chur.

Incidentally, the 'h' is silent. It's pronounced like Jim Kerr.

Got update from the RAC this evening. Daiagnosis said gearbox was flubbered (think we all guessed that one!). Garage in Chur can't fix it until 19 th August. We are due to arrive back in the UK on 15th. I was given 3 options. 1, extend my holiday to pick up car when fixed NOT an option as back in work on 18th; 2, repatriation of car dependant on market value (???????!!!!!!!!!) and have hire car to Calias, travel on ferry as foot passengers (with three weeks worth of luggage for two adults and two kids) and get hire car from Dover back to Pembrokeshire, even though I'm booked on euro tunnel; 3, wait for car to be rapaired in Switzerland and the fly out, pick up car and drive home. Decisions eh?????????!!!!!!!!!!!!

3, Fly back and pick it up later. Have a long weekend road trip driving it back and see Arosa/Lenzerheide. I've not been to Lenzerheide yet, but I've been to Arosa several times and it's very pretty.

European hire car companies will not allow their vehicles to be taken beyond Calais. That means being a foot passenger and picking up another hire car in Dover which I agree is a nightmare / impossible with family luggage. In a previous job role, I remember a customer driving his hire car back to the uk (without permission to do so) and calling RAC European travel to say it is parked in Sloan Square, London if you want it back. And oh, it's on a meter. So you can see why!

I guess the dilemma with (3) is a) how much for the repair? And b) what is the warranty situation surrounding parts and labour should any problem occur later on?

Overall a nightmare situation. I hope it goes ok. 2006 4.2 SC

Not a good dilemma but at least you can still afford a beer Laughing

Has the, "That car has got to go!" husband wife debate kicked in yet?

Thumbs Up

Can the RAC not repatriate the car with you, your passengers & luggage on the 15th? Meet you in Calais (in your hire car) swap luggage etc to your FF, load it onto ferry/train then back on a recovery truck in Dover for the long trip home Yawn then repair it at your desired garage back in the UK! With of course the all important warranty Thumbs Up

Just had a call from RAC. The car will be repatriated and I can put any luggage we dont need in it providing I can find the garage and the car hasn't already left! Can't travel back with the car is it will be on a lorry with other knackered motors returning to UK. Just got to find someone in Pembrokeshire who can source and fit a new gearbox. Going to have some more beer and schnapps this evening whilst I can afford it. Beans on toast for the rest of the year and no new school shoes for the kids!!!!!!

Well it's a step in the right direction!

Are you definitely going to have it repaired? Depending on how attached to it you are you could auction it as a non runner or break it for parts.

The latter is pretty time consuming and requires space but hugely profitable!

Just something for you to ponder as you're sucking on the pre-lemon schnapps tonight! 2006 4.2 SC
