A friend of mine has a 2007 TDV8 which has covered 90k miles.

He started having electrical issues with it where it would go into limp mode and show a load of electrical warnings on the dashboard. The battery was replaced with a new 110ah battery and the faults seemed to clear for about a week. When we had the heat wave last week all of the faults returned when he was running the air con, headlights and everything at the same time.

The warnings are: Engine fault, HDC fault, Air Suspension fault, & Transmission Fault.

When I was with him the other day I noticed that it makes a funny noise when the car is switched off. It's like a screeching noise after the engine has stopped. The viscous fan has completely stopped turning when it makes this noise. I video'd it and have stuck it on YouTube:



I don't know if these are related or not but it's a strange noise. When switched off the voltage on the new battery is 12.4v, running with some electrics turned on it's 14.4v however it does seem to raise to 15.4v with everything electrical turned on which to me seems to high.

I know the alternators are a common fault on the TDV8 but was just wondering what other peoples opinions were as I've heard they're not that nice a job to change.

The other problem with this car is it seems to loose coolant. The oil is clean, there's no steam from the exhaust and no obvious coolant leaks from the car. However there are bubbles that appear to come into the heater tank around the bleed screw in it.

Is it possible for low coolant to trigger the faults above and put it into limp mode? I don't think it is but thought I'd ask just to be sure.

David...mine had a similar electrical issue which eventually turned into a near dead battery situation with all lights coming on and then flashed off then on then dead. The LR assist engineer diagnosed a faulty alternator that had gradually gone from charging the battery to drawing current from battery. A new alt was fitted and they said the battery was ok and has been for 18 months.

I also get that exact noise ( intermittently lasting up-to 10 seconds after engine shut down) and thought nothing of it really, other than a fan slowing down, but it never does it when it's been in for service work, so it's never been diagnosed...would be interested to hear opinions on that myself.

It's definitely a strange noise and not one I'd heard on our old TDV8 before we sold it.

Is it the squeak squeak noise x 5 or 6 at the end? If so, its the EGR's absolutely normal...

I'd make sure everything is turned off. Wondering whether it could be something to do with air con cooling down. Sounds like air bleeding through something. Maybe try with suspension at different heights?

Not sure why they make the noise Paul, but they all do it and i know its the EGR valves that are doing it

Hi Craig,

If I'm reading you correctly you're saying the noise in the video is normal and definitely comes from the EGRs. Would you know if a 3.6 TDV8 didn't make that noise if it was an early sign of problems with the EGR valves? Rehab is for quitters!!!

Just noticed my 2008 TDV8 makes the same noise after switching it off.



Could it be a gremlin trying to escape and it being proof that coal burners are the work of Satan?
