New user: GEARBOX drama.... No one can help up to now....

Hi all,

I've got a RR 2006 TDV8 88k on the clock. 2 months ago I was getting a heavy clunking in fifth gear - either when I kicked down from 6-5, or if in 5th any acceleration above light acceleration she would jump straight to 6th...

Took her to a LR specialist and put on the diagnostics.... Mis-match between 5 & 6, new/recon gearbox required.

I took her to a well renowned auto transmission guy who replaced with a recon unit (£2300 + VAT).

The problem is still there but nowhere near as much, when I took it back he told me that it may need a software update. I did this but this has made it worse. He also told me that the gearbox needs to relearn the software upgrade and therefore to drive for 1500 miles and it should have disappeared.. It hasnt Big Cry

Do any of you have ideas on what this could be..??? THANK YOU IN ADVANCE Very Happy

I had that on my 2007 TDV8. Exactly as you describe. It was a faulty torque converter causing it but I had all the fluid changed at the same time. Was fine after that.

Did you get the codes read ??? It almost sounds like the problem I had with my 4.2 and that turned out to be a problem with one of the coils. However that was 3-4 shift problem. At the time I replaced the complete set of coils (not too expensive) and that solved all the problems. I'm sure it won't only affect the 3-4 shift (my 5-6 also sometimes gave me issues at the time) so it would be a good option to check that first.

However since it has a recon unit in it, what was changed out exactly and was it actually changed out ??, especially, were the coils changed.

The software update doesn't resolve the coil issue, I tried that as well !!!

Thanks all, I will take these back to the guy who did the gearbo (Aintree Automatic Transmissions), he seems totally genuine and was recommended by a lot of people, he has been in the business 30 yrs and mainly does the xf gbox.

Thanks so far and I'll keep you updated..TTFN Bow down Richie

The issue with the coils is not well documented it seems. The ZF box is in a lot of cars (different brands) including the big boys like Audi/BMW/Merc/VW/Ford Oz etc. These boxes, the 6 HP 26, are virtually bullet proof and the gearbox outfit in the Netherlands (they have also been around for years and years and only do gearboxes) couldn't help me diagnosing either, because so few go wrong. They did say that the coils is one of the first items they replace on these boxes if they come in with problems.

RRPhil did however do a great job in helping to find the issue and since we resolved a few other forum members issues the same way.

I hope your problem will be resolved in exactly the same way. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

I hope it is of use to you because that would be an easy fix !!! If the guy just replaced the Mechatronic but not the coils for example, that would explain why you are having issues still, if I'm right about the coils being the problem of course Smile

Fingers crossed on this side Smile MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Ebajema, when you say coils, do you mean electrical coils, as in solenoids? I'm intrigued now because if so it might well explain an issue that one of the D3 chaps has.
Cheers
Dom.

i.e. these.

Hi Dom, yes, I keep saying coils but indeed the solenoids are the problem. Going through my post may help the D3 guy, at least give him some info on what the issue was. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Hi all again,

UPDATE: so I've spoken with Aintree Automatic Transmissions (guy who did my gearbox, and he has told me that;
Complete new torque converter at the same time as the gearbox.
Solenoids/coils could be the problem.
He is looking to find an old software file for my 2006 RR to reflash the system as it was nowhere near as bad as it is now with the latest file.

It goes in next tuesday(24th).

I have also spoke with Neil Smith (cheers Scotyav) who has asked me to verify if the merchant roan and valve unit where also changed, hopefully there will be some light at the end of the tunnel soon..

Thanks so far....... Richie
