I've just started to service my 3.6 TDV8 and noticed a quite loud whirring (maybe squealish) kinda noise from the engine bay, when the ignition is on.

I haven't noticed this before, for 2 reasons

1 - never had the bonnet open with the ignition on until today
2 - maybe never heard the noise with the bonnet shut before, as I'm deaf as a door post

Soooo, is it normal?? I thought maybe diesel lift pump, but the noise is there all the time. (Thought the lift pump would stop after a minute or so)

I have just changed the diesel filter, which was a royal ass pain.

Could be the cabin heater aux water pump. This is supposed to do that, and is a great help bleeding the V8 petrol engines.

If it's all the time it could be the cooling fan for the ecu box, the big black one, it has a cooling fan in the bottom and a temp sensor, cools the ecu's when it gets hot... The fan's are known to dry up and squeak a bit, if you take the lid off it would confirm it... gave mine a blast of penetrating fluid and it's shut up since.... Pete
