United Kingdom 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE TDV8 Bournville

I think I read somewhere recently that a pedestrian is 5 times more likely to be killed at 35 mph than at 30 mph. Quite a big difference for not much variance in speed. Not making a comment on anyone’s style of driving just thought it was a chilling statistic. 2021 P400 Silicon Silver AB

Hmm pay my wages, does that make me self employed?

i've several friends in the 'job' - some good some bad as in all walks of life Smile

i'll admit that on open roads i can be a bit quick but in urban areas esp around schools etc i'm super careful (as humanly possible)

In terms of percentage 5MPH on top of 30MPH is quite a lot though really.

I'm sure the statistics for 50 vs 55 are not so different - ie you're 93% likely to die vs 95% etc.

Personally I don't speed past schools etc or through housing estates with parked cars where there may be extra hazards. However motorways and dual carriageways are fair game.

some of the most aggressive cyclists i've ever encountered are on the inner ring road in nottingham

i've seen them kick cars on more than one occasion when they (the cyclists) are weaving amongst stationary traffic and find too narrow a gap!

what can you do? - no way to identify the rider of a 'milking machine' Smile

very true

drive according to the conditions - because the legal limit is say 70mph it does not mean its always safe to drive at 70mph

other factors of course are driver skill or lack thereof/type of car/condition of car and brakes etc

As Clarkson rightly pointed out, it's not the speeding that kills, it's the rapid deceleration.

I forgot I commented on this back on page 1 Laughing

I had a clean licence anyway but for me I wanted to find the course intersting and informative but sadly they didn't really deliver on either count or tell me anything I didn't already know with just one exception:

The scenario they set was -

Three identical cars are travelling along a motorway, the car in the near side lane is travelling at 70mph, the one in the middle lane at 80mph and the one in the outside lane at 100mph, Ignoring time to think, braking distances blah blah blah and assuming they all see three lanes of stationary cars the same distance ahead (must be the M25 Laughing ) and start to break from the same point. If the car travelling at 70mph just stops before rear ending the stationary car in the nearside lane at what speed does the car in the outside lane HIT the stationary car in front of it???????

Answer: 78MPH!!!!!!! Shocked Shocked Shocked

Now the course organisers would say.......very good you have learnt something today and yes I never knew that statistic but I never travel at 100mph so it wont change my driving style Whistle

Unless you're in a RR supercharged and the 70 mph car is a ten year old Mondeo, then you don't hit the stationary car either because you have much better brakes!

Exactly !! Even the highway code has never been updated since cars had non-servo drum brakes all round, crossply tyres when remoulds were commonplace and suspension which would not look out of place on a rickshaw.

I recall a Top Gear test of straight line braking from 60mph where they compared a RR with a Ford Anglia. The RR stopped in less than half the distance that the Anglia needed and about a third of the distance quoted in the Highway Code.

For the awareness course to be taken seriously it needs to be a tad more factual. And the rather inconvenient truth is that speed does not necessarily kill, INAPPROPRIATE use of speed is the bit which kills. I have always maintained that 90 on a clear motorway is far safer than 40 in a 30 near a school. Nuff said.
