Maybe also have a check in the boot for any signs of water or damp where the trailer socket connects to the main loom. Previously..

simplest way would be to follow the wiring from the outside socket and then un-plug the plug.. ... - .- -.

It won't be a sticky pin sir as the male/female connectors just slide over each other... You can just unplug the ECU in the right side of the boot and it will deaden the system... I would guess the ECU has a problem... As stated above, check there is not a leak in that side of the boot. And, the spare wheel is secure (as the trailer wiring runs across the back panel) and could be squashed or chaffed if the spare is not secured...
