Retaining a Reg Number

So is it just the case of paying £105 to get a personalised number plate off a car and holding it on retention , and when off the dvla assign another number to the car and it can get sold on ...( The Car that is )..... ====================================

"Open Mike Night " sounded like a lot of fun until i found out i was going to an Autopsy

Yes, pretty much. The original registration number is put back on.

Do not sell the car until your cherished plate is on retention otherwise you have legally given the right to display the plate to the new owner. I know lots of people are relaxed about it but it's risky!

The safest bet, if time is on your side, is to wait until the V5 and tax disc come back with the original plate and then it's all clean and tidy. 2006 4.2 SC

Sounds about right to me, but for my last change I got a different "original" number back (same 57 year plate but different..no idea why. GONE 2010 Facelifted 3.6 TDV8 - Stornoway Grey + 22" Overfinch Olympus

That is usually where the first owner has a private plate so no plate is allocated. When it's removed DVLA will then assign a new random one. Otherwise DVLA will put the original plate back on wherever they can.... 2006 4.2 SC

Or find a cheap banger, transfer it onto that and keep the banger sorn until needed, cheaper than the retention fee every year the way scrap values are you could buy something for £150 and it would still be worth £150 in 2-3years time lol FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

That's an interesting option! So the transfer would be £80 instead of £105. Not that it should be a problem, just make sure the banger is older than the number plate (you can't make a car appear newer than it is).

A SORN'd banger also makes a great garden shed and a place in which to store all of your FF spare parts. It's also bound to delight your neighbours Thumbs Up

Or..............rather than SORN it, buy a daily smoker for shopping trip, station car park etc. I always think the Pistonhead's "Shed of the week" is a good read..........There is lots of fun to be had for a bag of sand!

But the 'banger' would need MOT'ing again before you could take the number off ...

Would it?

I was told when i asked that as long as you transferred it off before scrapping it you should be ok. FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's
