battery drained

Hi,

I was messing about with the radio transmitter that's built into the rear view mirror of my tdv8. To program the transmitter, the ignition has to be in position 2, so all the lights are on the dash. I was in the middle of it and a bloody double glazing salesman camedown the drive and kept me chatting for about 10 mins.

I got back in the car and realised that I left the ignition on. Went to start the car and the battery didn't have enough charge to turn the engine over!

Is this normal for the car to run the battery right down in 15 mins if the ignition is on?

The lights were set to auto, so they may have been on, not sure?

Cheers,

Paul.

Censored !!

I've got one of those jump starters. It gave enough charge for the battery to turn the engine over 6 or 7 times, but it didn't start, so can't have been enough charge.

I've put it on charge, but I only have a small trickle charger and I don't think it will be enough to charge the battery.

Can I disconnect the battery or will the range rover not like it?

Unless using an optimate type charger that's on all the time and maintains the battery from what I was told it's always a good idea to disconnect the battery to give it a good full charge. The difference between theory and reality is that in theory it will work.

Can I not just disconnect the negative terminal to charge the battery?

Yep I would drop the pos of the battery then charge it in place. The difference between theory and reality is that in theory it will work.

I left the trickle charger on over night then at lunchtime I connected my freshly charged jump starter and she fired up again, left the car running for 10 mins, then put back in trickle charge.

Car starts as normal now.

That will teach me to leave the ignition on!!

Cheers for the help/pointers.

Paul.
