TD6 Electronic problem?

I get trans failsafe displayed particularly when towing. The gearbox has been replaced twice also a new Gbox ECU fitted. When the alarm comes up there is no increase in engine revs, all gears are available and the fuel consumption stays constant. Checked all earth connections, new battery fitted, fuses checked and terminals cleaned. The alarm reading on my Hawkeye is P0740 excessive converter clutch slippage. But after 2 replacement gearboxes which were supplied by the most well known and respected gearbox company in South Africa I am convinced the fault lies elsewhere. I have checked the plug that goes into the gearbox electrically also the transfer motor. Any ideas or suggestions will be appreciated as I am now ata total loss as what to do.

Thanks Stan that is the most helpful article I have read. I had checked the cable and plug to the gearbox but will check it again. Unfortunately the Hawkeye reading is accompanied with "fault no longer present"or "intermittent fault" I will also check the positive feeds to the ECU. I tried to get the nearest agent to check with their test equipment but they could only do it in 3 weeks time and as they are 300kms away and would not quote a price to connect their equipment to it, I gave up.

Have you checked your "hi/low" transfer box motor is working? This also brings up the same dash message sir... Thumbs Up

Hi
Yes checked and used occasionally. Do you think this problem has the potential to do any damage we have done about 10k since the new gearbox was fitted and it has only occurred once when I am not towing. It is so dammed intermittent when towing may occur after 20kms or 200kms and I can find no common factor when it occurs.

Hi
Yes I would take it to the nearest agent, a round trip of 6/700kms, plus having to stay overnight for 2 nights, if I felt I had any confidence in them and they would give some indication of price. The alternative is to go to Cape Town a round trip of 1400kms at least one agent there is helpful. This is why I am asking for any ideas, the only thing I can see at the moment is possibly the gearbox ecu cable has been damaged in some way. I think this gives some idea of the problem of living so far from "civilization" and owning a complicated vehicle. Any other suggestions will be appreciated.

Sounds like your torque converter is on the way out. The transmissions rarely give trouble in their own right, it normally is the debris from the torque converter breaking up which clogs the transmission valve chest and causes all sorts of grief.

The electronics are alerting you to the fact the torque is slipping under load and overheating the transmission oil in the process.

Drop you transmission and fit one of these...it will tow forever with very few problems afterwards
