RR campervan conversion

Hi Riverstick can you shed some more light on the conversion issue. What if you have it converted already, does this mean you'll have to re categorise the class of tax next time you get it tested. Where can I find the new wording for this. Thanks in advance. Question

Hi Guys,

I've been driving the living daylights out of my TD6 for almost a year now and I just can't break it! These cars are a lot tougher than people gave them credit for. I fitted a new AGM battery last summer and this solved all flat battery starting issues immediately..



For a variety of reasons & false starts I never got the transmission overhauled or the uprated torque converter fitted.

Anyhow, two weeks ago, she refused to start one morning from cold....a small wiff of ether(easy start) and she fired and performed fine.

Then it was time for some old fashioned diagnosis. So I took off the leak off pipes off the six injectors and started it...sure enough numbers 5&6 were returning fuel excessively...so I got them overhauled...£100 each...and problem solved....no drama...no laptops etc....sometimes the old fashioned way works with modern common railed egr engines.



So...then I decided to remove my transmission for rebuilding...



And my turbocharger for hybriding...








I also began to fit this...

So I took the fascia apart to fit the controller unit in the cabin..



My transmission guy informs me the unit itself was in pretty good nick...a bit of wear...some filings from the torque converter, but he is still beefing it up for me.

New transmission, torque converter and turbocharger fitted.....Water methanol injection system in the process of fitting...




Pump and solenoid fits neatly in front offside wheel well




egt probe fitted neatly into the exhaust manifold egr port



I always new the egr diffuser would come in useful some day....

What a brilliant project.

If you fit all that stuff at the same time it's not going to be possible to tell how good each individual mod is on its own, but at least you've only got to have the car off the road once.

Are you going to post links to the individual items when you are done ?

Hi MJ,

I got the turbocharger hybrided by http://www.auto-tune.co.uk. They fitted a bigger compressor wheel and housing and also modified the profile of the exhaust turbine wheel. I don't think this in itself will give any huge power increase because the fuelling maps must be tailored to do this, ideally on a dyno. My friends in the remapping business tell me that while the M57 power unit is easily good for 300~400bhp depending on the version, the restriction to power delivery in our version is the turbo. Remapping will be the next step and give the real power increase I am looking for.

One of the most prominent weak points of any tuned engine are the exhaust gas temperatures(egt). When these rise above 1350 degrees your aluminium pistons and head begin to melt and crack. This can happen very quickly when under extreme load ....eg towing. Manufacturers detune their engines for this. They also fit bigger intercoolers and turbos to keep the egts down when calling for more output from the same engine. I opted for the Water Methanol injection system primarily to control the egts when the engine is tuned but also to see if really injecting blue windscreen washer fluid(contains 30% methanol) really gives a power increase.

I am confident that the transmission upgrades will stand up to the power increase and judging by the look and feel of the torque converter, it should be good also. When I did order the torque converter, I specified a 1500rpm stall as opposed to the factory 2500~2800rpm stall. I have only driven the RR around the Workshop so far and can confirm the stall is exactly 1500rpm. This should vastly improve power delivery, fuel economy and durability.

Have you thought about using an aquamist system for the intercooler?

A very fine spray over the intercooler of a methonal mix would drop its temperature quite low.
If you read around the net there are guys on forums that's have done it and used temp sensors to prove its worth during prolonged runs. FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Yes....misting water or even a water/methanol mix over the inter cooler is very effective in reducing the Iat's but what swung me towards Snow Performances system is the automatic controller which, in addition to monitoring the the engine and dosing it with methanol when needed, also gives live turbo boost pressure and egt read outs....always vital when monitoring your engine.

Another advantage is Snow's system gives constant cooling supply off road at low speeds and high power outputs. Bigger inter coolers etc prefer higher road speeds to prove very effective. 2008 Range Rover TDV8 435,000kms

Cool, I've seen similar systems in the past where they end up dumping the IC and pipework as well as it reduces spoolup/lag so fullboost is achieved much earlier. This would go well with your lower lockup speed you have...

Did you think about the twin turbo bits from a 335/535/735 unit at all as from what I've seen online the manifolds may match up quite well but the piping is the real work Very Happy FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

I looked into the BMW compound turbo setup and fitting it is not really a huge issue as the Range Rover engine bay is generous with space. The main issue with this set up is controlling the waste gates and by pass flaps on this system. The Exhaust Manifold Pressure and Boost Pressure must be accurately controlled and balanced, and this is done via the ecu and an array of electro/vacuum solenoids. I failed to find anyone to take on this end of the upgrade so I made do with just upgrading the existing turbo.

It's a pity as a twin turbo M57 is only purring at 400bhp and 700nm....Which is big V8 territory....but at that output you are back into potential transmission issues again. 2008 Range Rover TDV8 435,000kms

With the compound turbo and flaps would it not be best to go manual and old school and have two different wastgate air pressure circuits and mechanical divertor valve as well? This would take care of the boost part of the system.

Fair enough it may not be as quick and accurate as the electronic system but it would do the job and allow big big boost. Although to be fair im a roller bearing turbo fan 😄😄 FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's
Mantec Sump Guard, Rigid Load liner, MY10 BT upgrade.
