Definitive Battery Guide for 2010 model

well having read countless posts on here recommending a certain larger capacity Bosch battery I went and bought one - they don't fit a 2010 ff.

The situation is this: there are batteries available from many manufacturers which are 393mm long (inc the recommended Bosch larger one) and the next standardised size down is 353mm long (standard length for ff).

the longer battery fits in the battery tray of a 2010 model ok (and presumably earlier ones too) but 2010's have a device which hangs off the + terminal on the side - i think this is a safety device related to the air bag system. this device occupies the space which is needed for the additional 40mm length of the longer battery.

if your car has this device fitted, the longer battery will not fit.

information on Eurocar parts and some other battery fitting sites is incorrect for 2010 models

I'm surprised it does not fit mine has the same engine as yours and I too have the safety device fitted and the bosch fits mine . Present :2008 TDV8 HSE

It fits with a bit of fettling. My previous TDV8 had the big Bosch and it also had the pyrotechnic charge safety thing. A bit tight I agree but it definitely fits.

You will see that others, like me, had to saw off the flange at the bottom of the battery to get it to fit. It is strange how some people get them to fit in the same model year, with the pyrotechnic attachment and others have to do the mod. Question 2012 5.0L S/C

I am gong to be swearing at this today too, so will put up some pics.

It does go in but you may need a pry bar to move it over to the wing side

Will see how it goes. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Yep, I have a 2007 TDV8 with said pyrotechnic charge and the big Bosch battery fitted fine with no modifications at all, it's tight sure, but patience as well strength and some jiggling with the bonnet in access mode was all that was required in my case Thumbs Up

Maybe the 2010 is different - I don't know Confused Geoff

wish id taken some pics now.i calculated that it *may* fit if the wing-end foot of the battery was cut off but even that would result in the wing end of the battery sitting on the battery tray vertical ridge so if you're happy with that then maybe it does.

the only way i could see the thing going in would be to turn the pyrotechnic device around so that instead of being at the side of the battery (toward the centre of the engine bay) it was somehow swung around to be between battery and bulkhead (or dispensed with altogether!

incidentally, my original battery is fine providing the pre heater is not used.

Ok,

i have been outside and sworn at it for an hour,

it is in.

I have a load of pics which are uploading at the moment and will be in the gallery in a bit..

First i put the bonnet in access mode

top tip it to tie the gas strut on one side up out of the way so it dent foul the wing on lowering

removed old battery
slackened the bolts holding the battery tray and slid it over a few mm with a pry bar, and did the bolts up again whilst holding it over, this gave a few more mm.

tried the battery in the car. hmm, it will go just...... if you lift the +ve end slightly and fit the pyro charge before lowering it into the tray. Wasn't happy that this was the best way, so the battery came back out.

out came the wood saw and i removed the -ve end flange carefully, its not a structural part of the battery unless you are clamping there. Easy to do if you are really careful.

Battery now drops straight in no bother.

Ok so the battery had to be modified but tbh it will go if you nudge the tray over a little and fit the charge first. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I have the big Bosch in my TDV8, but my mate with a 2010 5.0 has a much smaller battery space

does that not squash the pyrotechnic device and its very heavy +12v cable against the vertical bulkhead?

how much clearance is there between the pyro and the vertical chassis flange after removing the battery side flange?

so is the battery negative end sitting on the vertical flange of the tray thus making the battery sit wonky?

Once the battery was in place, I used a crowbar to move it to the outside so that I could get the pyrotechnic charge in - it's very tight, but does just fit Thumbs Up

No, sitting flat in the bottom of the tray.

Is a 2008my, but tbh i cant see there being a lot of difference between that and a 2010?
Cable is free to move. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
