£25k to spend.......

Afternoon all, first post on behalf of my brother who is in the market for a FFRR. ( I unfortunately am not allowed one by SWMBO Big Cry ....for now.... Twisted Evil )

He has give or take £25k to spend on a diesel engined RR. Might be convinced to go petrol if the sums add up as he does up to 20k per annum and wants to keep the car for a long time (think 5 years or more).

From a quick look at Auto Trader with a 50k mile limit on he'd be looking at 08/09 MY for a Vogue SE?

I'll point him at the buying guide, but anything specific to watch out for in those years?

Also, any recommendations for reputable dealers in the Ox / Bucks area?

Thanks in advance!

Don't know about the year or dealers in oxon / bucks ( apart from Eh Douglas just out of Banbury) but when I was looking I came across this dealer and to be fare he was true his word when he did the walk round on the phone, seems quite a few of us will buy a car on the phone!

If the IId tool cant fix it.......burn the FF.

If the FF cant be fixed......buy a Land Cruiser!

If the LC cant be fixed..............................................BUY a horse !!

Welcome....
Well, first off, if I were going to be doing 20k+ a year, I would not be buying a petrol engined FFRR.
Someone will probably work out the difference in fuel cost between a petrol fatty and diesel fatty over 20k and say the purchase price will offset the difference..... But over 5 years the difference between up to 30mpg diesel and 20mpg petrol (if you are lucky) will be huge.....

Is there any particular reason why you're posting "on behalf" of your brother? We can do him a FFRR brown bag if he needs to retain anonymity! Laughing

At 20k miles a year, I would most definitely go diesel, as I did Thumbs Up Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

Loosely speaking, and using 18mpg petrol versus 27mpg diesel (realistic figures in the real world) for 20k miles a year it will cost about £6k for petrol against £4k for diesel, so £2k a year more in petrol, thus £10k over 5 years, less the initial cost difference. Resale value is a moot point if you're going to add 100k miles to it.

But that's not the whole story. 'Chargers cost way less to keep serviced than log burners. The TDV8 has junk like EGR valves, turbochargers (with variable geometry as well), super expensive injectors (8 of them) and all the stuff associated with a modern common rail engine. Every service bill I ever had on mine was 4 figures whereas my petrol V8's (Discos and L322's) only really ever needed oil, filters and the odd set of plugs.

Factor in the grin factor of a 'charger and I'd say the cut off point is a long way above 20k miles a year. Besides, who buys a Full-Fat to worry about 40 quid a week on fuel? If you have to worry about that amount of money then may I suggest the bus?

Just my 2p.

It also depends on the TYPE of driving. JLR has never given us the option of a diesel over here, but the petrol ones aren't too bad on the motorway at reasonable speeds. Around town is a different story!

I agree with the maths on petrol verses diesel. My (almost) 10 year old V8 4.4 does 24 - 25mpg on motorway runs with 122,000 miles to her credit. I was so convinced I went and bought a SC 5 litre to replace her! Good hunting!

Would he consider LPG - cheaper fuel and still the fun of a V8?

Thanks for the input and welcome folks! Plenty of food for thought to be going on with.

Now, any tips for convincing the wife that a Rangie is a good idea?

Yep.

Take her to your local dealership and take her on a test drive.
She will want you to have one straight away.

My wife drove mine once and came back grinning like a cheshire cat. Her favourite gadget was the mirrors tilting down to see the kerb when reversing Confused

I do miss not having mine now but it is on the cards this year to get another - definatley a LPG V8 Very Happy

I went through a similar process and was lucky enough to buy a 2007 s/c for 14k with 86k on clock with landrover warranty and full lr service history so I can buy a lot of fuel with the difference of the cost of an oil burner of the same year and miles - and most of all the s/c is a brilliant drive Very Happy
