Has anyone got any idea what additional premium might be incurred for allowing a designated driver to use my car?

I always thought that another insured driver would be allowed to use my vehicle providing they had my permission and I was a passenger.

Have organised a night out with a few mates in Central London which incorporates a few venues for certain reasons and have had to give my reg number for secure parking (originally I was going to drive, but a tee-total friend has offered to drive - which would allow me to drink )

Taxi would be ridiculously expensive due to picking up various people and public transport doesn't operate late / early enough.

I thought he would be covered with my permission - however after checking my policy it doesn't mention if this is possible

My insurance company isn't open to question this and wondered if anyone has any guidance....

You might find your designated driver has insurance on his/her policy to drive a car not belonging to them but with the owners permission.

You have to be very careful with this type of cover as it usually only covers third party

You really need to check with your insurance company as cover may be reduced if it's on thier insurance driving your car. Typically this is third party only.

Or it could be a simple no/yes to the question of temporaily putting another person on your cover. Often there is no cost. But if you just did it and there was an accident the insurance company would probably wriggle like mad to avoid a payout if it's a standard policy.

Mine is any driver between 25 and 75. Small print is the key!

Thanks guys - thought as much - I will see what my insurance company can offer - other drivers age might be a problem though

We have husband/wife as only drivers, but I added a friend on to our insurance fo £10 for 14 days for a boys weekend in france. this is with NFU.

Oh well - after speaking with my insurance company, they can offer occasional driver cover for approx £40 which I thought was quite reasonable, but - as our volunteer designated driver was just below their age limit of 25 - looks like i will be on the OJ

I have an 83 year old designated driver on both of my Land Rover Insurance poloicies and it costs me nothing extra, BUT when I contacted the company that has taken over from LRI ( it's part of Stratstones Group) they refused cover for him without a £1200 hike in premium "because of his age" -guess who I re-insured with for under £300 for the year!
