Knock Knock

No its not a joke, although I wish it was!

My L322 Range Rover has had a knock/clunk on the passenger side for about 3 months. It is most evident when turning right at slow speeds, like pulling into a car par or parking space, or a slow right hand turn on a road. Sometimes it can be heard at speed over a very rough road, and it is evident when off roading at slow speeds. It doesn't appear to have worsened over that time, no louder and no more frequent.

Everything has been checked, by two separate garages (both with lots of LR experience). There are no worn bushes or ball joints on the suspension, nothing shows any sign of wear even when testing the car off its wheels with a big pry bar, nothing moves the way that it shouldn't, all bolts etc. are tight, the road wheel nuts are tight, its not a clicking sound so its not likely to be a CV joint, it's a clunk, and only when turning right.

I have been through the similar posts on here and while I can find post containing the same symptoms none of the offending parts mentioned would appear to be worn on my car.

Apart from the suspension strut, is there anything else that can cause such a noise which may not be showing obvious signs of wear?

Sounds like the arb drop link is worn out can get overlooked by some garages easy way to tell is to go out to the car and give it a shake and see if you can feel excessive movement....

Did mine, super easy and cheap, driver side actually rattled when i jiggled it There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I also have a similar noise. Its been there since I got the rr and not got any worse. If I had to put money on it I would also say arb link but I have pulled and pushed on mine a few times and cant get any noise or play from it! It had a new strut fitted the day before I picked it up so don't think its that either, its so bloody annoying that I cant find it Evil or Very Mad

One thing to check is that your brake pads are tight (not to tight though) in the carrier and not rattling around as they can make a fairly loud clunk noise if they are loose fit.

If you fix it please let me no what you find.

Have the so called "experienced tech's" jacked the car up under the bottom wishbone (to raise the wheel off the ground in its ride position not extended) and tried the bushes, ball joints and ARB links then?

As you may not find the route of the knocking if the suspension is fully extended instead of in it's "usual ride height"

Need to be on dead flat ground or there will be a torsional force on the arb, and the drop links will be in either compression or tension... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Try tightening the pinch bolt on the inboard end of the bottom track control arm, I think it can make this noise, it's difficult to find by just prying the bush/ arm, it will only move a fraction under the full weight of the corner when a direction change is made, the tiny bit of movement is amplified through the subframe

I should really have mentioned the drop link and lower arm and upper arm have been changed on that side, apologies for missing that out.

If I ever track it down I will let you know! Does yours sound like a shock absorber rapidly moving up and down?

The people I refer to are Land Rover trained technicians, including a master technician. One garage is an ex-land rover/rover dealership. They gave up the sales side when the father died and the sons took over the business, about 30 years ago. They also maintain the local mountain rescue Land Rovers. Bushes etc. have been checked in normal ride height and with the wheels off the ground.

I know the noise you mean, I had that not long after I collected the car. The master tech at the garage identified that noise simply by driving out of the forecourt!

So anyone have any other ideas? You are either at Le Mans or waiting for Le Mans

Had exactly the same stuff, came from the steering ball joint. Was making me crazy. Excessive play, and after a year, brake disc warped. Changed (+ both discs), noise gone.

That's interesting, would you have a part number of diagram of that part to confirm? I havent had any issues with brake discs or brakes in general.

No I don’t, had it done by a forum member. But what he did is he jacked up the car, and pivoted the wheels, klonk was then very noticeable, and you could see the play. Discs problems happened much latter.

With the car on the ground loosen the inner bolt on the lower arm and then re tighten it. If it was tightened on the jack the bush will we under the wrong load it gives a small knock I found that out when I did mine

I will ask the garage to do this, its not weather outside for lying on the ground! However they normally do all that with the car still on a 4 post ramp on its wheels, but still worth a try You are either at Le Mans or waiting for Le Mans
