My father has a 2006 2.0D Jag X type, and happened to ask me if its normal to kick out black smoke when you acceleate. I said the usual " a bit if you really floor it and its not been driven hard for some tiome, but only once and then OK".

He's had the car about 4 years now, its done about 35k miles. I followed him yesterday, and boy is it not normal. He floored it in 2nd and I couldn't see his car for black smoke, and then none of the oncoming traffic either. It also put smoke out on any slight incline, without the throttle hard down. All the time.

He said its been doing it for a couple of months. He's had the EGR replaced last year at a Jag dealership, so I can't imagine its that.

I'm hoping its not gonna be too expensive, as my step mum will have him sleeping outside through the winter.

I've suggested he check the air filter and intercooler pipes.

He says it drives fine, no lack of power, no unevenness or lumpy idle etc.

Last year, I seem to remember he said he had the glow plug warning light come on whilst he was driving, and the car lost all power. He pulled over, turned the ignition off and on, and it was fine again. Did it 3 or 4 times over a period of about 4 or 5 weeks, then has been fine since. At the time, a search of the web seemed to indicate "low fuel pressure". We put it down to a "glitch".

He has no warning lights on of any sort now.

Hoping its not injector related ?

Have you folks got any further thoughts or ideas ?

Have searched the web, to see most people end up at EGR........

Air Filter and general service first, then chuck a small amount of BioD into 1/2 a tank to flush the system out.

Another thing i do sometimes but on older diesels is park the car pointing downhill for the night and then squirt some fairy up the exhaust and then fill it with water untill it starts to trickle out. This then will loosen any crud built up inside the silencers. In the morning start the car and dont rev it at all for about 30seconds and it will just flush the water and crud out. Drive the car normally and it should help.

If its such low miles my gut feeling will say the injectors are not spraying correctly due to not having long runs to get them red hot and clean off. Cleaning them may be the best bet but i think that engine is a lot of fun to get the injectors out.... FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

My FFRR did something similar and it turned out to be a split hose.

Belched out black smoke, then a few times got a 'Special Programs Off' message before being consigned to limp mode. Quick switch off & back on and all seemed fine (except for the black smoke).

I was very relieved that it only cost me about £30 - I hope it's something similar.

Gut feeling says it probably needs a good hard run, high revs to get some heat into the exhaust, has it got a dpf? If so they need heating up occasionally to free them of crud this can be achieved by a good long run 1/2 hr plus at high revs

If its been running fine then i would hesitate to suggest injectors, however if its not cruddy then it is possibly overfuelling somehow and the first point of call is to plug it in and see if there are any fault codes. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Blocked EGR valve and manifolds

I'd go with the DPF aswel.

Needs a good run at a constant speed on the motorway so it should regenerate. I'm sure it's sitting in 4th if its 5 speed or 5th if its 6 speed doing about 2500 revs for 20 mins once warm!

The DPF will be getting blocked a its hardly done any mileage a good run will do it the world of good every now n then.

If its an 06 then it won't have DPF... But it has got the 2.0d Mondeo engine that suffered with injector issues

Ide start with a track day session drive for an hour and clean it all out

Have you tried running your hand down the pipe that comes out the rear of the turbo, these suffer with tiny hairline cracks and this will leave you with plumes of black smoke covering the road under acceleration. I tried all the EGR methods before I found this problem, turned out to be quite a common failure on all the mondeo diesels. Hope this helps.

Bit of an update, he's given it a bit of a thrashing and it no longer emits black smoke. To be honest it only gets really short runs and he tries to drive economically and not rev it.

He has bought a bottle of forte advanced diesel treatment and will give it a workout every so often to clear things out.

Have had that a few times on various diesel cars, a good thrashing basil fawlty style will usually sort it.

Swmbos skoda threw an engine management fault a week or so back. Damn good thrashing(car not swmbo) sorted that too and that is a petrol.... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
