My part their labour - reasonable?

I'm offering to buy a part if my main dealer fits it for free.

Main dealer recently removed my engine to fix an oil leak under warranty that has been leaking for 2 years since buying the car from them. Car was returned still leaking, the leak symptoms being exactly as they have been from day one. Garage said they'd fix the leak wherever it was from as they'd had the engine out/ full front end of, therefore 'down to us'.

Now being told it's the oil filter housing assembly that's leaking but it's on back order and not covered by warranty, not down to us, so you'll just have to take the car back.

Having rung a few main dealer parts depots, I've found one at approx £350.

Have offered to buy the part and have it delivered to 'my main dealer' if they will fit it free so that nobody can say someone else has meddled with the engine, hence invalidating LR warranty if anything goes awry in the future.

A reasonable request or not?

If this fault was present when you brought the car then it's not warrenty that entitles you to a fix, it's your statutory consumer rights that mean they need to pay for it all.

Thanks for the replies Jim and for the responses to the poll.

The garage quickly agreed my offer to pay for the new OFH assembly and they will fit it free of labour charges (it's an easy part to fit tbh and I could do it myself but to my mind, I keep on the right side of the warranty this way and there's still over a year to go on that).

I could argue that it's down to them and they should pay £350 for the new part (even today, they accepted they've obvious obviously disturbed something when taking the engine out) but they've shown a lot of good will in the past couple of years and it works both ways Thumbs Up

So, rang for an update today as to how the repair was progressing. Was told the part on back order had been ordered and would arrive next week and they'd get on with the repair then. But I sourced and had the part delivered to you 3 days ago? Banging Head

As I keep saying keep away from main dealers unless you want stupid or to be ripped off, you may as well set fire to cash or give it away, too many years in industry to know the majority are high end crooks with big overheads, _____________________________________________________

Why wouldn't the OFH be a warranty repair? Can't check my warranty doc (as it's in glovebox n FF is in for warranty work, has an oil leak Rolling with laughter !) but don't think it's a wear & tear item is it? Especially as you have had the same oil leak for 2 years they've failed to rectify. 2011 (MY12) 4.4 TDV8 Vogue

Scotty, they took the engine out to repair a ladder frame leak under warranty. Into the 2 to £3k based on MD labour rates.

As they 'did it' and took the lot out, my view is they can make good on any leaks which they agree to but (RJH) the LR warranty is 'Select' and so, according to LR the OFH Assembly is not covered as they don't class it as a major engine component?

The LR warranty chap was inclined that I should argue the point and ask the MD to stump up for a new OFH but I just want the thing fixed without argument and for the sake of my £350 odd, on the proviso they do the labour FOC and get it right, I preserve the warranty aspects and demonstrate having been more than reasonable so am on solid ground if anything goes awry in the near future, which, based on past experience...

Thumbs Up

Wrong make sure you don't give in to these barstewards good luck Thumbs Up _____________________________________________________
