Evening chaps,

A friend and I have acquired a slightly cooked l322 that seems to have suffered a water pump failure, and subsequent overheat and seizure. Our intention is to replace the engine with a takeout unit (replacing the water pump in the process) and use the car for a while.

A few of questions

Has anyone on here done this? I am not used to working on full indy vehicles where the diff is in the sump, so is there anything to watch out for during removal from the mechanical point of view?

Secondly, we need a replacement lump - does anyone have one lying around (sorry, had to ask) or can recommend a source? Have used the likes of equicar in the past, but they don't have any in stock.

Thirdly, once we have done the 'refit is the reverse of removal' thing, what nightmares are we going to have with the electrics? The car has been sat with a dead battery for roughly 6 months beforehand, so will need some sginificant ecu coaxing I would imagine...

Lastly, is there a phot walk thru or a decent manual for this car? Haynes don't appear to offer one...

I realise that's a lot to ask on a first post, but imagine I will have more questions as the project commences!

Not sure a out the other questions but there are links to workshop manuals, generally known as rave in the wiki at the top of the page  There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Good point, it never occurs to me to look at rave or microcat, but that should really be my first port of call.

A 4.4 engine will be expensive £3-£4K and very very hard to find as they are like hens teeth! Needs to be the same code as the engine you are removing...

Mines on 155,000 miles now and every now and again I get a bit twitchy about the milage! Although it still goes like a train and doesn't burn any oil.

Rare because not many were made and most that we're had LPG Fitted in there lives and ruined the engine... So hence their rarity...

Fair enough - although I thought LPG on the BMW M62 unit was fairly safe?

Would the same engine from an X5 fit? Might need some ancillaries swapped - but it should be the same basic unit and there might be a few more about.

I don't think X5 ones are the same engine code or 5 series 7 series etc etc... Hence their rarely found... Just had a customer looking and could not find one in the UK for under £4k

Fair enough on the LPG issue - I kept meaning to get mine done and never got round to it.

Depending on how badly the OP's engine seized, might be worth whipping it out and taking a look inside and seeing how bad the damage is - might get away with a rebuild - as long as the bores aren't marked as I believe you can't rebore them due to the Alusil (or Nikasil?) cylinder liners.

I've heard good things about Warrington Engine Centre - they have rebuilt a few of these - again it's not cheap - depending on what nasty things are lurking inside.

I am lead to believe that the specific variant is the M62TUB44, which is common to the X5 and one or two saloon cars as well as the range rover. From what I can tell the starter is in a different position on the BMW applications, but the castings are there for the RR version, so just need blanking/drilling as required for the correct position. I would have thought the Sump was specific to the RR application though, hence my initial questions above...

Having looked around, I believe I can get a running take out for less than 2k. That is the price I have been quoted, albeit by people without them in stock. Obviously that is without any ancillaries. It remains to be seen how true that is, but there's no panic so I can afford to wait.

In terms of rebuild vs replace - given the construction of the engine (alu block and head, with nikasil liners) and the price of BMW parts we decided that a complete replacement was the order of the day - obviously that won't stop us pulling the old unit apart to see exactly what state it is in!

The people that work on bmw engines and those who actually run a BMW 4.4 V8 on lpg are all very happy .

That will be Douglas Valley Breakers? Never used them but they were showing breaking an L322 on EBay a while back....

if you take your head(s) off you will need to borrow, or buy a timing setup kit to retime the cams/chains. (£350) if you are dismantling, have you run the bearings? sump off first, cap off etc. might be a better idea to start by hiring a decent lit borescope to look into a bore, with piston down. -maybe a do a compression test first and look at the worst one. did it seize? can it run? these engines are fantastic, but suffer from a few other probs, ie timing guides, vanos rattles, and water system leaks. if you are buying one, ask someone who has one to listen to it. they purr lovely, but some clatter. ive not had one out. I would do lots of other work before even looking at replacing it. and replace those guides and chain. whilst at it. but that's £500 already. hope you have a garage and heater. you will be busy for the winter!
I did the vanos seals when I did my guides/chain. it worked well. don't quote me here, but the block is the unique thing, (edit, the block is same, the sump and oil pump/pump chain are the difference x5 engine is suitable too) on the RR but bmw 7 series vanos engines, m62tub44 are similarpriciple, but different block. (2 wheel RWD), so a warped head 'could' be suitable from this model to replace the RR check the web.
this guide will show you the vanos repair. everything you might do, without taking off the heads. save the file to pc.

I have one that needs an effective rebuild but the heads etc are excellent, your for £375 collected... Owning a Range Rover is the land based version of a boat...a hole in the road in which to throw regular bundles of money!
