Considering the fluid life on the gearbox is 60,000 miles, less on the GM you should probably do that anyway. Then see if it improves. Often people say it improves shifting but I cant say I noticed a difference when I did mine @ 110,000 Miles!

is the shuddering more noticeable if you throttle lightly oppose to putting your foot down.

Stuttering & juddering are often coil pack related. Are you sure its from the Trans? Have you checked the PCV hoses for leaks (if you're BMW) the spark plug wells can fill up with oil which messes with the coil pack to plug connection.

There is some info here:

Not a specific amount of oil, but less than 7 litres.

hi probaley not what you want to here, but it sounds like what i had and would be a light shudder around the 25 to 30 mph on light throttle, if you give more throttle from standstill it seems to not happen... it was the toque converter shuddering, trying to lock internally V8 facelift Range Rover Autobiography 22" wheels.

Torque converter is what I was going to suggest as well.

The issue is wear in the valve bores - in this case it would be the torque converter clutch valve. The GM 5l40E transmissions have their problems and general consensus is that they will almost ALL go at between 80k-100k miles, so you're nearing the end of your transmission's life-span.

If you can, speak to John Mackie. Extremely knowledgeable and helpful.

Sorry - & good luck.

Sorry to hear that mate. Hope the bill isn't too painful..... Trans failsafe is just the car saying that its detected a gearbox/ drive fault of some sort, and gone into limp mode.

Good luck with it Thumbs Up

well its official torque converter and box wrecked!!! and only 30 miles from when it 1st felt odd so if you have a TD6 and its done 50,000 miles change your transmisssion filter and fluid NOW dont wait 30 miles like i have !! take it from me 50.000 miles then 100,000 and onwards for a cost of around £120 to 250 get it done instead of £1000s like i have !! I have had a 5 gearboxes in my TD6. Land Rover charge thousands.....

There are quite a few independent specialists around who will do a gearbox change for about £1600, for a drive (push) in service.

I guess being on the IOM may limit your choices, but if you can get over I can recommend a few!!
