changing power steering fluid

Hi all

Any one changed there power steering fluid in there FFRR yet. Mine needs topping up but has yellow fluid in it at the moment while the official Land Rover fluid i have purchased is green Censored and dont want to mix the 2. Nothing in RAVE on how to drain and refill.

Draining and replacing mine is also on the to do list.
I haven't had a proper look at it yet though.

I would think all you need to do is undo one of the pipes on the rack and let the fluid drain out then do it up and refill with fluid and bleed system by turning the wheel from lock to lock a few times. (I'm sure Craig will put me right if the above was a load of Censored Very Happy )

Mine is yellow told its cold climate stuff thats it.
I was going to change mine as i thought the steering was harder than it should be.
On closer inspection i saw the steering u/j's on the shaft were dry so oiled them up and its a lot lighter. Razz

I changed mine a few months ago - it's very simple to do - but needs two people.

Just remove the reservoir from its bracket, then remove the return pipe and put it into a bucket or large bottle. Keep your finger or thumb over the hole in the reservoir where the return pipe connects and fill the reservoir with new fluid.

Get your glamorous assistant to start the engine - now pour the fresh fluid into the reservoir until the fluid coming from the return pipe into the bucket is clean and the same colour - to be sure put another 1/2 litre through then switch off the engine.

The fluid will pump out very fast indeed - so be ready with the bottle to start pouring the fresh in the moment the engine is started - it will empty the reservoir in about 5 seconds!

Then put it all back together, top up the reservoir, start the engine, top up, lock to lock on the steering and top up again if needed. Close bonnet and declare a good job done.

If you are changing the fluid type a proper flush as described is preferable.

However, I simply sucked the old fluid out of the reservoir and topped up a number of times. I used twice the published volume of the system. I noticed a difference as it had not been replaced before. All has been well since.

I managed to do a full flush my TD6 steering fluid by using an engine oil vacuum suction unit. £15.00 on a well known auction site.

1: Remove front engine cover and air intake to fuel cooler.
2: Cover alternator to avoid spills damaging it.
3: Remove reservoir cap and suck out what can be seen in the reservoir.
4: Disconnect the return pipe on the side of the reservoir (small pipe) and plug the inlet.
5: Using vacuum pump connect it to the return pipe and ensure it is sealed as best you can. I used an intermediate size rubber tubing to ensure a good seal.
6: Pump out old fluid whilst keeping reservoir topped up.
7: When fresh coloured fluid appears in vacuum tank stop pumping by disconnecting vacuum hose.
8: Connect up all pipes again.
9: Mop up any spills.
10: Remove cover from alternator and refit engine cover.
11: Start engine and bleed by turning from side to side a few times to ensure any air drawn in has been expelled.

Took me about 45 mins-1hour. Took about 1 litre of fluid to flush through.

I don't have the vacuum set up you have so had to resort to a smaller cheaper DIY home fix.
