Just bought a 2003 Vogue 4.4 ... will post pics after I've given it a nice polish !

Tested everything before buying and found the steering wheel tilt inoperable. Funny how the seller didn't mention it ...

Anyway quick call to Hunters in Derby and they quoted around £350 to repair.

So got the seller to knock this off the total and took the car ...

The column is actually spot on for me, and to be honest i could live without getting it sorted.

Anyone tell me the cheapest and easiest method to get this sorted ? ... oh and I'm no mechanic and wouldn't dream of attempting this myself - unless it was very straightforward.

Can't help with cheap and easy fixes. However, once you have it sorted, my advice is to motor it forwards and upwards until it's at the end of it's stops and doesn't move when you put the key in. Adjust your seat so you're in the right place without the wheel having to move and Robert is your mother's brother. They do have a tendency to fail so this prevents unnecessary wear and tear.

Odds on, its jammed not broken. There is a nut on the end of the worm gear that tightens and then prevents it from turning.

So, take the panel off below the steering wheel (few screws etc) then look upwards - You will see a worm gear running right to left with a 13mm nut on the end nearest the drivers door. Gently back it off half a turn and try the tilt.

To prevent it happening again, I removed the single nut and fitted two narrower ones then wrung them together so they locked. Alternatively, you could clean the threads and try loctite.

Hope this is all it needs!

Rather than start a new thread on this - does anyone know how to lubricate the column? Mine makes a noise when its retracting when switched off. Sounds like it needs oil. 2010 MY Vogue SE TDV8 3.6 Stornoway Grey- fully loaded

I used a long artist's brush about 1/4" wide with grease on it and lubricated the screw mechanism. Noise gone.

Ooops, forgot to mention have to remove the lower column cover of course.

If lubing the screw thread doesn't work, try a small squirt of WD40 (or teflon spray) on the bit where the shaft turns by the motor end, (you can see the spindle spinning round there), as these tend to cause the eek, eek eek noise. You know when you have found the right bit as the noise goes away

I'm being v lazy now- how do you get at the mechanism to lube it? 2010 MY Vogue SE TDV8 3.6 Stornoway Grey- fully loaded

There's 3 torx screws on the under side of the shroud, the top 2 should be esy enough to get at with uninsulated torx screwdrivers, but the one at the bottom by itself is tucked right in, I found a couple of 3/8 extensions from a socket set with a torx bit on managed to reach it no problem. Once the screws are out, lift the top section up and outwards (If I remember rightly!!) The lower one will drop down too, then lookin up from underneath the steering colum, the spindles are right infront of you.

Clipping te shrouds back together was a bit fiddly, especially the leather trim between the dash and the shroud.

All together, should take no longer than 20 mins to do the whole lot, alot of the time is spent swearing at the stupid flap of leather. 2006 Mercedes CLS
