Antifreeze - Corrosion Inhibitor......
Colour - Does not matter, manufacturers use it to aid spotting the level otherwise it would be clear. Saying that a colour system has developed over the years starting Green, then Blue, then Red and now Orange. The difference in them is the inhibitor system.
Blues and Greens were I.A.T or INORGANIC ADDITIVE TECHNOLOGY (Phosphate, Silicate, Borate) used mostly pre 1990
Red was/is H.O.A.T HYBRID ORGANIC ACID TECHNOLOGY (Phosphate Free) Used from about 2000 good for 5 years / 100,000 miles
Orange is O.A.T “PURE” ORGANIC ACID TECHNOLOGY This technology is good for 5 years / 150,000 miles
Red and Orange have less environmental impact.
You need them year round to prevent engine corrosion as well as in winter to prevent freezing
Typical construction is:
Glycol: 95%
Ethylene Glycol
Propylene Glycol ( low-tox products )
Corrosion Inhibitors: 1 to 4%
Inorganic/ Organic
Water 1 to 3.5%
Antifoam 10 to 1000ppm
Bitterant ~70ppm
Dye Trace
There is also a yellow one made by Prestone which will mix with any colour antifreeze without changing the original colour.
So for RR use Red, Orange or the Prestone product. Paul Redding
