i think so although i reverse out my drive and it is uphill so this would feel different anyway. cold weather could stop the oil warming up and lubricating properly so it might be worth waiting a few more seconds than normal before setting off to see if that helps ?

Mick glad you used the right term "Shunt" and as RRUK states

If the vehicles been parked on slightly sloping ground and / or not run for a few days this can cause a shunt as the oil has drained down out of the system. It can also be caused by a blocked transmission filter on certain RR models - including the Classic. Shunts can also be caused by wear.

If it only happens when the car /gear box oil is cold then its liklely that its just the oil draining back out of the system.

Sometimes I get a hesitation (slight juddering like cycling back and forth between two gears) changing up between 30 - 40mph when cold and accelorating hard, is this likely to be caused by the same thing? It only happens once and doesn't happen again in that journey.

I had another auto that always changed up very late on the first gear change when cold then was fine after that.
