Amazing to see demand for the Airbus A320 so strong even though it was designed in the late 80's.

But then look at demand for the Boeing 737 that was designed in the late 60's - ablait with very many iterations. In the early 70's they were making only 2 a month - they're making over 40 each month now - 40 years later!

Expecting some announcements from Airbus sometime soon - I think certainly this year.

Their A330 was meant to be replaced by the A350, but it's kept on selling. In fact selling very well. Airliners like the fact that they don't have years to wait for a delivery, it's a mature technology, and it's substantially cheaper than a Boeing 787, even though it does burn more fuel.

But to keep it going they will need to address the fuel consumption. I suspect that just as there's an A320neo (new engine option) so there will be an A330neo.

Also, the A380 is seriously challenged for fuel burn by these new big twins, and the coming heavily revised 2020 777, so I think there will also be an A380neo.

The thrust requirements for the twin engined A330 and four engined A380 are pretty much the same, so I think it will be the same engine. Given the timescales and the small production size of these programmes, there's not enough time or return on investment to develop an all new engine. The candidates are developments of the current engines on the 787 - the Rolls Royce Trent 1000 or the General Electric GEnx.

My bet is Rolls Royce will be sole source supplier for both these programmes because Airbus will not want General Electric having a monopoly on the two largest airliners in existence.

In case you're wondering what they do when they're testing and certificating a plane, they don't just fly around waiting for something to break.

These are the interior shots of the A350 and as you can see it's quite an exercise and incolves some serious hardware.

This picture below is actually from the A380 when they were testing it. All those blue things that look like water bowsers are actually water bowsers, so they can play around with weights. I'd imagine they'll be doing something similar with the A350 before long.
