Have you tried pulling the handbrake in an emergency stop?

I was shown how to do this properly on the Range Rover Exhilaration Day (Search the forum for a write up on that).

My brakes have been making odd noises, so on the basis they were on the way out, thought I'd give this a go in the real world. Found a nice straight road, no one else about for safety. 50mph, foot off the foot brake pedal and pull and hold the handbrake. release again just before a total stop.

Amazing how quick these things can stop Thumbs Up

PS: have also done this at 70mph.

NB: This was done on a car with the EPB, not the traditional version! Discovery 4 HSE

That would scare the bejeezus out of me!

Out of curiosity, did the ABS function using the EPB? Researching my first Range Rover purchase

just a word of boring caution Razz , never ever apply the handbrake while you are moving on Land / Range / Discovery which has a Hand brake which works on the transmission, not only will you break the back axle, but your gearbox is likely to suffer severe damage - as transmission H/B's work on the output shaft of the gearbox and not on the rear disc's / drums like a conventional car, you are also likely to lose control of the vehicle.

Output shaft handbrakes are on Series LR's, 110's, 90's RR Classics and Discovery 1 and 2's etc

The Only exception to the above is in an emergency.

Can't remember, it all happened so quick, there was lots of beeping and then it was over! Discovery 4 HSE

Above about 6mph the EPB switch activates the "service brakes" (i.e. the 4 corners) using ABS + traction control as necessary Smile

On a series LR it's a sure fire way of breaking your halfshafts. On my RR the HB uses drums on the back which barely hold the car still in a light breeze!

I cant envisage any situation that would require the use of the e-brake.

I thought you had the electronic park brake on your car?

Mac,

no it hasn't and in fact there are a few more noises. It's definitely time for new pads and discs all round. I reckon they are still the original ones so at 40k have done enough. The discs are well ridged and in need of the bin.

For a laugh I'm going to call some dealers tomorrow to see just how expensive they can quote! Discovery 4 HSE
