It really doesn't need any sort of remap!

I think that will suffice! Discovery 4 HSE

Power aside, I think the 8-speed gearbox makes a noticeable difference to the performance figures.

My reworked 4.2 is almost equal to a 5.0 on torque but still pretty short of it on outright power. However, the 5.0's 0-60 time is incredible compared to the stock 4.2's 7.5. And the 5.0 is supposed to be better on fuel, too. Si. <This is my name.

But they didn't put the 8 speed box with the 5.0 V8 because apparently it just can't handle the power. Discovery 4 HSE

More likely they couldn't spare the development time, and the fuel economy advantage of the 8-speed is less of an issue where most supercharged ones are sold.

Gearboxes are rated on torque capacity - all L405s including the 5.0 Supercharged have the same ZF 8HP70 (700nM rating) which the 4.4 TDV8 got. There are versions with higher torque capacity, but I assume that's why the SDV8's torque is pegged at 700nM.

I was told 2nd hand via a LR Engineer who when asked said they'd tried and tried to make it work, but the 8 speed wasn't man enough. I can't think of a logical reason why you wouldn't put a newer more efficient 8 speed box with the supercharged in the 4 years it was made, if you could, unless it couldn't be done? Discovery 4 HSE

i can confirm the above my mate is a development engineer at JLR

and whilst they can handle standard they were worried about the issues if they were chipped and the likellyhood of SC owners ragging it through the box

incidentally he also does remaps on the side He has done a 4.4 tdv8 to 490bhp and wait for it 1000nm of torque
needless to say the box went bang Growing old is compulsory Growing up is optional

As above, I would suspect development time being focused on models and markets where the 8-speed's economy advantage was key.

If it isn't "man enough", why is the exact same gearbox now behind the exact same engine in both the new Range Rover and Sport?

The torque delivery of the TDV8 should present more of a challenge to a gearbox than that of the supercharged petrol.

The 8HP70 is rated at 700nM at the engine so not a huge surprise if it isn't capable of taking 40% more than that. There are higher-rated 8HPs (that in the BMW 760 and Phantom is rated for 1000nM) which share the same external dimensions as far as I'm aware.

Saying that, I would be very surprised if the standard turbos on a 4.4 TDV8 will make 490bhp - 390 sounds more realistic.

One of the things I've asked them to do is replace the old silencer tips for nice new shiny ones Very Happy

Might also have the front windows slightly tinted further, some colour coded side vents and possibly a later 2012 style grille with black surround.

Already got the titanium rear tailgate strip ready to go on (Used my old Brunel one and sprayed and lacquered it) Discovery 4 HSE
