It really doesn't need any sort of remap!

Power aside, I think the 8-speed gearbox makes a noticeable difference to the performance figures.

But they didn't put the 8 speed box with the 5.0 V8 because apparently it just can't handle the power. Discovery 4 HSE

I was told 2nd hand via a LR Engineer who when asked said they'd tried and tried to make it work, but the 8 speed wasn't man enough. I can't think of a logical reason why you wouldn't put a newer more efficient 8 speed box with the supercharged in the 4 years it was made, if you could, unless it couldn't be done? Discovery 4 HSE

As above, I would suspect development time being focused on models and markets where the 8-speed's economy advantage was key. If it isn't "man enough", why is the exact same gearbox now behind the exact same engine in both the new Range Rover and Sport? |

The torque delivery of the TDV8 should present more of a challenge to a gearbox than that of the supercharged petrol. The 8HP70 is rated at 700nM at the engine so not a huge surprise if it isn't capable of taking 40% more than that. There are higher-rated 8HPs (that in the BMW 760 and Phantom is rated for 1000nM) which share the same external dimensions as far as I'm aware. Saying that, I would be very surprised if the standard turbos on a 4.4 TDV8 will make 490bhp - 390 sounds more realistic. |
