I have started getting the "suspension fault - normal height only" messages and the orange suspension height control knob lights turn off. Has anyone used one of the cheap fault code readers which claim to work with any car (this one for £20 seemed very reasonable! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Any-Car-Engine-F...0888167451 )?

I really just want to be able to see what the error codes are before stripping down the compressor etc - rather than playing with settings on the car...

afaik the cheapo ones only read the common generic codes and not the landrover specific ones.. ... - .- -.

Had the same issue on mine and it was one of the height sensors. Easily spotted as it was hanging loose. The new one is plastic and not metal , presumably to prevent further failures due to corrosion. Worth a quick look with the old Mark 1 Eye ball

The cheap ones only read the bear minimum "public" OBD2 codes, they are totally useless for anything to do with a vehicle or manufacturer specific system.

Do you think that they might be able to read the codes but possibly not have the interpretation of the code (so I could still have more information about faults, but possibly not the translation of the code?

I've had a quick visual check and the height sensors all appear to be there.

only someone with a cheapo reader could answer that Nigel...more money but you could consider a IIDTool or RSW allcoms, these units read and clear vehicle specific codes and the IIDTool lets you configure things like the ranges height and beep on lock etc.. ... - .- -.

I bought the very same item for my sons fiesta... Worked a treat. Tried it on a diesel mondeo as well, superb... Tried it on the FFRR.... Does not talk to it AT ALL... It just does not communicate.  Previously..

Oh b*gger - it's going to the dealer then - I can't justify £300 to check fault codes using the other tools (I'm sure that they are great, but I have no need for the adjustments that they offer). Thanks for the replies!

Argos sell an RAC one.... You could try it and take it back if it did not work..

Update: very impressed with the support (thanks Patrick) from gap-diagnostics and the unit - loads of fault codes now identified and cleared - although the dreaded "C1A20 Pressure increases too slow when filling reservoir" now needs either a pipe leak identifying or a compressor refurb (or both)!

I stripped down the compressor - although it seems that it is a newer model with a steel bore (compared to the photos on the wiki); cleaned that up with fine emery paper; cleaned the piston seal and lower seal; lubricated it all with silicone spray.

The problem (I think) was a very wet dryer, so the dessicant was dried out in the oven and repacked. All put back together and no more error messages for the moment.

On off road height, I don't get a corner settling BUT every time I leave the car (in any height), there is air hissing from somewhere near the rear wheels for about 30s - but no further fault codes, so I have two questions:

1) Could this be a leaking pipe between the compressor and valve block?

2) Should I empty the reservoir and drain it in case there is further water in there (I wanted to ensure that the compressor was happy before I did this)?

Where is the best place to get an IID reader?
