Temperature gauge position first start

Hi all

Still having bother with this temperature gauge!

Mechanic pulled the car out the garage this morning and rang me. He says when he turned the key and fired up car the gauge went straigh to about 3/4 way up the blue section, so thinks its a dicky gauge? As he had it plugged into his snap on machine yesterday and gauge was past 1/2 way but was maintainving a 71 degree temperature?
