Broken Driver's Window/ New door required

Whilst driving about an hour ago with the driver's door window down, I pressed the button to auto close the window. There followed a noise like the glass snagging on rubber, the glass ground to a halt about 1" from the top of the door frame and then I could hear the sound of the window motor, motoring on. A vertical crack appeared from the bottom of the glass (roughly about in line with the outer wing mirror casing) and the crack then got bigger.

The rubbers around the frame are now all snagged and there is an obvious pressure on the glass (the rubbers were all in tact and looked fine when I carefully washed the car this morning).

On pushing the electric window button to try and get the window to open and alleviate the pressure on the glass, nothing happens. I fear that the glass is literally going to break which could be dangerous if it occurs when the car is being driven.

Has anyone please got any ideas or should I call LR assist (on the first image below you should be able to see the main snagged rubber trim and the gap at the top of the frame where the glass is 'stuck')?

Thanks

... And since posting this a few minutes ago, I've checked and the crack is now from one point in the glass to the other (see second image)!

Can you use some form of plastic tool to try and ease the rubber seal out and back in place and then firmly grab the glass with door open and hand on either side of glass to try and lift slightly to relieve the pressure. It may then close but you may also break it further but its going to have to be replaced anyway.

Thanks for the quick helpful reply Gaz... Ironically I had thought about using a credit card Rolling with laughter ...

I'm now wondering if the motor might have actually 'burnt out' as well due to the rubber/ alignment snag.

Ive since put the car safely in the garage to keep it dry overnight whilst I work out what to do. I'm thinking maybe actually leave it to let the main dealer see the state its in/ what's occurred and so nobody can say I've contributed to some sort of consequential damage.

We will manage using one car (again) til Monday.

Cheers Thumbs Up

I think I would leave it for the dealer to see or make lots of pics and then try to close. I seem to remember that you are not very close to the dealer ?? If so then driving like that is not great noise wise and you have to probably tape up the gap when you are driving on a rainy day. You must be glad that it is still under warranty I bet Wink MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

I'd be inclined to try lubricating each of the slide seals inside and out on both sides of the glass and see if you can get the glass to drive down. Possibly assisting it by hand.
Silicon lubricant or wd 40 should do.
If you get the window to partially lower you should then be able to sort out the seals before closing for now.

All really helpful replies as usual/ thanks.

The MD we bought from is a long long way away (and I don't think ever wants to hear from us again anyway)..

The excellent MD who has since tried to rectify and atone is only a 30 minute drive away.

I think the car will yet again remain untouched and 'mothballed' in our garage until I can get it into them on Monday morning.. but it's getting embarassing now .. although my lovely wife's patience is wearing/ has worn thin.

My wife has started to make jokes about the lack of availability of mine (3 weeks waiting for parts with another week coming). She is comparing it to Ducati and in all honesty the reliability of both is very similar Sad MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Ha.. To be fair, there's no logic to my 'patience' with this car... and it's not even mine!

Why not call Autoglass out? The glass if dead anyways... Its their job to sort these things... Im guessing the window wont move due to being stuck! Thumbs Up

Window moved itself to the half open position today... switch motor just whirring when pressed up or down and window wedged in position.

Main Dealer Service Manager (not the selling MD but the 'put the wheel back on' one) was in touch today observing our lack of good fortune to date and saying they will collect the car from our home this week and fix this latest issue before returning the car. Mrs pld instructing me to replace it with a 'more reliable' new BMW 5 Series Touring Embarassed

Whilst never having had any car with so many issues cropping up in such as short space of time (not complaining/ just fact), despite the disappointment and frustration of that, actually feeling grateful that the Service Manager is so focused on trying to do his best to give us faith in this brand. Very impressed with him.

Let us hope it is just clearing up the issues now and then have years of "maintenance only" ownership. That's the way I see it and I keep hoping it is coming soon Smile MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

I thought all modern cars were equipped with anti-trap sensors to prevent the motor working against a potentially injurable source? I wonder why yours didn't react that way?

Bad luck and my sympathies. I can't say more than what's already seen said above. I also think Autoglass need involved but if the motor's damaged then it's a dealer visit anyway.

Let us know how you get on, Ryan. Fingers crossed. Thumbs Up

By the way, I think the same dealer is leaving me alone as well. Laughing And I've been looking at Jag XJR's lately... Embarassed Must stop this. Laughing Si. <This is my name.

Thanks all... the Service Manager says he's experienced regulators failing before but not this scenario.

The glass did look a wee bit 'out of line' on that fateful closing run though.. and - don't know if it's in any way connected - the MD did re-torque the driver's door stay a few weeks ago because it had worked loose which was causing a god awful creaking sound when the door was opened and closed.. and since then the driver's door is the one that never quite freely closes/ usually catches the latches and clicks closed at the second attempt.

New Door Required

An update:
It seems the reason the regulator, window glass and seals all expired/ broke was due to the fact that the driver's door was twisted. New driver's door required, along with regulator, glass, seals etc...

MD paying for the repairs but no confirmation yet as to why the door was twisted...
