Further update from the garage:
MD Bodyshop giving the opinion that the car door must have been vandalised/ maybe someone tried to break into it at some stage as their opinion is the car has not been in a major collision.

I'm surprised they are paying for repairs in that case. Vandalism (or crash damage) wouldn't normally be covered would it?
