CHAPS payment is the only way to do this and be safe... it'll cost you/him £25 but small price to pay for peace of mind.
Here's a useful bit of info I received when I recently bought my car from a dealer :-
1) Debit card – this is the easiest way to pay for your car as it clears straight into our bank. It is worth pointing out that some banks need prior arrangement for a large payment, so, for peace of mind please check with your own bank.
2) Credit card – unfortunately because of charges we incur, we can only take up to £2,000 with no charge.
3) CHAPS bank payment - this is an electronic payment from bank to bank and it clears into our bank immediately upon receipt.
4) BACS bank payment - this too is an electronic payment from bank to bank. However it can take up to 3 days to transfer and 24 hours to clear after receipt into our bank.
5) Personal or business cheque – this will take 7 working days to clear. There is no “fast clear” to shorten this method.
6) Building Society cheque - this is treated exactly the same as personal or business cheque.
7) Bankers draft – because of stolen drafts our company insist that we verify the draft with the bank it was drawn from. This is complicated by the fact that some banks will not verify the draft. Therefore, coupled with the fact that the bank will charge you for the draft, this isn’t the easiest method of payment.
8 ) Cash – We can only take £5,000 in total; this is due to money laundering rules.
